Ok you blizzard survivors - how did it go?
I am in SE Iowa and the temp is dropping like a rock, @10 degrees now. The wind is blowing like crazy. Hope like hell our power doesn't go out.
We have the corn burner going. Just preparing to light up the wood fire. I have these because the electricity went out once when it was below 0, so I have backups.
Fortunately, neither Mrs. Lib nor I have any need to go out today.
Took me 3.5 hours to shovel and blow the walks and riveway.

Stay warm!:hi: :hi:

2. a corn burner is a furnace that burns corn.
surprising, huh?

but it is a fuel that is plentiful in Iowa. makes you house smell slightly like popcorn, too.

4. So, you have like 50 lb sacks of corn
with the cobs I assume? How much does that
cost in cornholia?

5. I actually have two bins out back that hold @ 40 bushel together
I have an old setup. I have had it now for 5 years and things have improved dramatically since I got into it.
I literally carry corn in by the bucket. On really cold days I go through @3 to 4 buckets. A farmer brings the corn in and fills the bins
The corn is off the cob. It is just the kernel.
Basically it is a pellet stove, burning corn instead of pellets.
And the reason I do not burn pellets is that they give off about half the heat corn does.

Some folks now have real corn furnaces. And some setups literally hook a corn wagon to feed the fire.
One other thing - I have to clean out a 'brick' of unburned leavings daily. This gets composted. Maybe you can remember clinkers from the coal furnace days?

6. I've wanted one of those corn-burners for quite some time now.
Whenever I get to the point of redoing a house I'd love to put one in that automatically feeds the corn in. I wonder if there are any that would integrate with a steam-boiler system? Steam heat in the winter is a very steady, nice and toasty heat, no highs or lows to speak of.

We don't have even an inch of snow down here, just bone-chilling winds.
