Had a FANTASTIC conversation with the cashier at the grocery store today
She said I shouldn't lift the 24-pack of bottled water out of my cart onto the belt. Then she asked me when the baby's due.

Er... x(

Officially asking for a membership to the Y for Christmas... x( x( x(

In the meantime, somebody tell me I have a great personality or something.

Trying to feel flattered that the woman could think I was still young enough to be pregnant...?

I had someone make that same type of comment to me once, too. Ouch! I think it was Dave Barry who said never to assume a woman was pregant unless you actually saw a baby coming out...

I have nothing against small talk with people working the register. However, some subjects are just not on the list of acceptable topics.

13. Exactly. Every adult should learn at a very young age never to ask when the baby is due until
the woman says "I'm pregnant".

Less exciting than speaking your mind, but you avoid hitting someone's palm or fist with the side of your face.

16. For real fun, you should have clutched the giant gut, "OMG,
I'm gonna have this baby right now!!" Clerk probably would have gone into an eye popping panic.

Yeah, not as much fun explaining to the paramedics it was just gas.

But yeah. I could really stand to go on a low fat diet right now. I start a diet then I break it a day later. I'm eating emotionally now and have been for about a year I think...it really has increased in the last few months. I must break the cycle.

37. I don't eat a lot, and exercise and diets don't do a thing for me
I'm blessed with a fucked-up thyroid and all the weird shit that goes with it--namely a metabolism that pretty much isn't one.

I've found that the thing that has the biggest positive effect on weight loss for me is my emotions. If I feel happy and safe, I shed pounds--it's wild. Unfortunately I feel neither at the moment and that crazy lady at the market didn't help my happiness level, dagnabit!

Oh, and here's something to make you laugh (from notalwaysright.com)

Putting The LOL In Little Old Lady
Retail | Wichita, KS, USA

(I’m checking out my last customer, a little old lady, before covering a break when another customer starts unloading his stuff into the register. Note that I’ve shut off my light and put a “lane closed” sign up.)

Me: “I’m sorry, sir, my lane is closed. I have to go to another department and cover a break.”

Other customer: “Well, isn’t that just fucking convenient for you!”

(Right on cue, the little old lady I was helping turns to the other customer.)

Little old lady: “Who the hell peed in your cornflakes this morning?!”

Other customer: *storms off*

(I hugged the lady and she is now a regular of mine.)

Funny, though, how we all have talents and skills we should be proud of, but if we don't look like a supermodel, it's not enough...? A sad statement on societal conditioning.

Thanks also for the lulz--as a former retail worker, I think that site could be a major time suck!

29. Trust me, it IS a major time-suck!
Good thing I'm unemployed so I can waste my available time on it instead of not-working when I should be ;)

One thing about writing, though, is how much I learn from researching. I was looking at Hawaiian names last night and still need to go through more of that file. And all just for one minor character!

In my second job I work a lot of shifts at a register and there are certain things you never mention to a customer (especially female ones)

1. Weight
2. Hair
3. Age

25. As a grocery store worker, I wince
Careless small talk can be unwittingly painful. We had a guy checking out a customer one day who had several large deli platters, soft drinks, etc. "Wow, this looks like it's going to be a great party!" he said cheerfully.

Turns out it was for a wake. Oops.

I confine my small talk to, "Hi, did you find everything you needed today?" and that sort of thing.

As a former bookstore worker, I can say that I often attempted social interaction beyond the generic, safe subjects, but I don't remember really sticking my foot in my mouth. I might have though. Maybe it's karma comin' ta git me.
