Why have they outlawed bedspreads? And wallpaper?
I hate the whole pricey coverlet/ruffle/sham bullshit. Shams, and all other pillow-related frou-frou SUCK - you're either taking the damned shams off every night and on every morning, or you have "fake" pillows" that have to be removed from the bed every night. I HATE show-pillows (and I'm a DSW-card-carrying female).

Do you know how hard it is to find a nice bedspread? You have to go to one of the retro places like the old country store - Sears and Pennsy's have some solid ones.

Grrrr. Bedspreads were so much cheaper and easier, and gave a nice, clean look. Why did everyone buy into the whole coverlet/ruffle/sham thing? Why?

And don't even start me on the stupid little bitches on the House Porn cable shows that squeal and cry if they see wallpaper in a house they are looking at, and instantly decide they hate the house, as if taking it down isn't as easy as pie. What's even funnier is that the ultra-cutting-edge designers on these channels have recently moved into the ultra-edgy decorating trick of using.....wallpaper.

God, I'm such a fogie.

2. My dear Patiod...
You might want to check with Lands' End Home...their catalogs have just plain bedspreads; I've bought a couple from them.

All kinds of nice sheets too...

They also have the stuff you don't want, but you can avoid it.

I think if you Google it, you'll find it.

Happy Hunting!

:hi:

3. I feel like I'm being forced to go retro.
I hate retro furniture. I was around when it was called "new", and I don't want to do it again. Why can't designers come up with an original idea?

4. Never invite people into your bedroom.
Problem solved. You, nor anyone but my wife has clue one about whether I sleep under a blanket, coverlet, bedspread, pile of furs, or whether I just curl up in a corner with some nice clean straw and a saltlick. And I can buy whatever looks comfy/warm/suited to my clean straw needs.

5. We recently stayed overnight with a cousin.
The guest room bed had SIX big frilly frou-frou pillows.
I ran out of places to stack 'em so I could just get into bed.

19. ARrrghhh - six pillows - what is this country coming to?
It's a symptom of something, I just can't figure out what...

6. Do you know a method of removing wallpaper that is "easy as pie"?
Would you please share it? I loathe removing wallpaper and still have some of that old "country-style" stuff that I would love to get rid of. Thank you! :hi:

12. Here's what you do
to remove wallpaper.

1) Go to the DIY store and get the following:

- wallpaper scorer (a little round thing that looks like the veggie holder for a kitchen mandoline
- wallpaper removal goop. There are several brands,
- brushes to brush on the goop.

2) Score the wallpaper all over with the scorer. In a pattern is best, like big circles or tic tac toe, whatever tickles your fancy.

3) Paint the goop on the wallpaper very liberally, making sure you get it in the scored places especially.

4) Wait the amount of time it says on the goop package, usually an hour or two.

5) Take down the wallpaper. Just grab an edge and pull. If it was put up well in the first place, it will come off in big sheets. If not, you might need a putty knife and some time.

6) Stubborn spots might need another round of goop to come off.

14. Thank you! Sounds messy, but not hard.
I was using a steamer and it was a mess and hard. I never heard of a scorer.

16. I think whoever invented the wall papaer steamer had a weird
sense of humor.

At least the wall paper steamer isn't as hazardous as the hot air gun for scraping paint off the house. We stopped using that after we charred a few boards.

9. I know exactly what you mean about bedspreads.
I finally found a chenille one a couple of months ago. They only had 2 color options. Light blue or off white.

10. And curtains?
Plain old, slip on a road curtains, not "window treatments."

Hey, wanna help me get the kids off my lawn?

11. One of the worst home project experiences of my life was removing the wallpaper
from my in-laws' foyer. And I'm pretty good at home improvement projects, had all the right equipment and followed the directions carefully. The wall paper came off in microscopic pieces and either left rock-hard residue on the wall or removed chunks of the wallboard. My husband and I swore we'd never get wallpaper after that travesty. Paint is so much easier to apply and so much easier to change when you are ready to change.

I agree about bedspreads though. I hate ruffles and bedskirts and all that crap. I don't have as big a problem with pillows as you do, though.

18. The whiney bitches on those shows drive me up a wall.
What's the deal also about gas stoves, 2 sinks in the bathroom, and hardwood floors that must be a bitch to keep up.And master suites! what goes on in there that they need so much privacy? Don't they have locks in the house? They all want open floor plans so they will have to tolerate not so master rooms. One couple wanted a certain place because they were so tall. They weren't basketball players.

20. Where did the whiners grow up that they're so horrified?
Physically upset by wall paper and single sinks? And God, what will happen to this country when granite counters become the wallpaper of the 2010s?

As for hardwood floors, though, I did grow up with them in my room - I refused carpets, and the family finally came around and removed carpet from the other bedrooms and halls. I am actually a hardwoord floor snob.

Abd as for tall - my friend had an amazing early 1800's Quaker farmhouse in Bucks county, and she married a guy who is about 6'4", and he wouldn't move in. As much as I LOVED her house, I couldn't blame him - the stairs (one a spiral) were really tiny and difficult to navigate if you're over 5'10" (she and her late husband were both sort of short). Fortunately, they found a new place that used to be a barn that has giant ceilings, and a tiny retired couple to buy the farmhouse.
