Another Glacier Park webcam capture

The view from Apgar Mountain provides a dramatic peek into the North Fork area of the park.
This quieter and more rustic area was once a draw for homesteaders, and historic old cabins dot
the landscape north of the Polebridge Ranger Station. In the 1980s wolves migrated back into this
area from Canada, reestablishing packs that had not lived in the park for over 50 years.
More recently fires have occured frequently and in 2003 the large Robert Fire left its mark on the
view before you. Notice the spotty nature of the fire with burned and unburned forest mixed together.
This diversity of habitat provides ideal conditions for a number of species and is one of the
trademark qualities of the North Fork section of Glacier National Park.

Oh my, that's beautiful.

It reminds me of a day twenty years ago in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. My girlfriend and I were collecting samples from one of her field sites but the road in was closed by the Forest Service for winter so we had to ride in on horseback. Climbing the mountain, we passed through a sort of atmospheric thermocline, a discernible line above which EVERYTHING was covered with sparkling rime ice. Every twig and conifer needle stood out with a coating of spiky diamond. The sun was shining that afternoon, and the ice was blindingly bright-- tiny rainbows reflected from every surface. It was jaw-droppingly beautiful, and you could see the valleys and ridges spread out below, like the OP photo.
