How do you get a male cat to stop spraying?

He's 3 years-old, neutered, and he won't stop spraying. He sprays everything. Is there a way to make him stop?

1. Get him a taller litterbox

You can get either an open or closed litterbox, high enough for him to have an acceptable spot for him to spray. Spray catnip extract (catnip spray) in the box to attract him there and use pet repellent where you don't want him to spray. Try that and see how it works.

Chances are, your kitty was neutered as an adult. If that was the case, he developed his spraying habit when he was an unaltered tom. It will take a bit of time and repetition for him to break that habit.

2. First, try Feliway...

It's a synthetic "happy cat" pheremone spray. Make sure you get rid of every bit of what he has sprayed already beforehand. Also, talk to your vet. He/she may have some ideas. Your vet might prescribe something like Valium or Buspar. I know people who have sad some success with either of those.

There are always "Piddle Pants." (Just google it.) Some friends of mine built an outdoor enclosure for their cat. It helped, but he eventually wound up as a barn cat. Good luck.
