Singer Ronnie James Dio has stomach cancer
I saw him live twice, once fronting Sabbath, once on his own. Sad news.

Heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, his wife has said.

Writing on his official website, Wendy Dio said the former Rainbow and Black Sabbath singer was in the early stages of the illness.

1. Now where's the justice?
Ozzy's the one who bit the heads off of birds and bats and drank like a fish for years, and yet its Dio who ends up with stomach cancer?

Well, they didn't say specifically what type of cancer, but since they caught it early, hopefully it's one of the treatable varieties. :evilfrown:

15. ROFL biting the heads off animals is not a prerequisite for stomach cancer
My dad died of stomach cancer and I can assure you he never bonded with the craniums of small wildlife. (Didn't drink much, either.)

17. Well at least Dio still has his dignity
If he dies (God forbid) he didnt become a joke in his older years like Ozzy did.

2. Dio's an ugly little spud, but he had the best metal pipes of the bunch.
That guy could actually sing, and he could growl and shout with the best of 'em. I hope he recovers quickly.

5. He was singing and making records long before Sabbath. Or even Rainbow
Actually, he's been singing rock n roll nearly as long as there has been such a thing to sing. Formed his first band "Ronnie and the Red Caps" in 1957, believe it or not. The band later changed its name to "Ronnie Dio and the Prophets".

Check this out.... It ain't exactly "metal" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jlH6kHbJh0

7. That's incredible. Thanks for that. Who knew?
One of the greatest voices in rock ever. And he's always seemed like a nice guy, as well. I hope he has a chance to beat this.

Why can't stuff like this happen to soulless, bloodless bastards like Dick Cheney or Joe Lieberman?

20. He is a nice guy.
His wife Wendy is chair of the board of directors of Children of the Night, an LA organization that helps child prostitutes get off the streets. http://www.childrenofthenight.org/home.html Dio's helped raise a ton of money and awareness for them.

8. Yeah, he's a couple weeks younger than Paul McCartney
and older than the guys in the Rolling Stones.

Dio is one of the oldest of the rockers. 6 or 7 years older than the rest of Sabbath. Older than Pink Floyd.

Unmistakably his voice, as odd as it sounds with this style of music.....

23. I'd love to see him recover and yank Ritchie Blackmore out of his folksy stupor...
...I was never a fan of Dio's solo work, but I enjoyed Sabbath, while thinking that his career-best performances were in Rainbow.

I've always held out hope that while Blackmore would probably never reconcile with Deep Purple...they've all been far too vocal about being sick of his diva ways...maybe a Rainbow reunion would one day happen. Ritchie leaves the Toads of the Short Forest and "Blackmore's Night" behind for a while, straps on his Strat, and wails. "Man on the Silver Mountain"...who wouldn't want to hear that one more time with Blackmore and Dio?

Here's hoping that he conquers the disease, no matter which plans his future may hold.
