Thanks to everyone for their advice and support. In the end, I am very glad I came down. The girls are really happy to spend some time together and it turns out that my brother-in-law really needed someone to lend an ear. His burden is so much heavier than I ever thought, and the road ahead is going to be heartbreaking for the whole family. Hopefully they will all get through it okay, but I'm really worried right now.

Yes, definitely glad I went. I've now heard both sides of the story. I just hope those two girls get through it without lasting damage and I hope both adults can somehow make the best of an awful situation. My heart is just broken for all of them.

The shit is really about to hit the fan in this family, in ways I never expected. I think, being the sole pinko-tree-hugging-hippy-liberal in the family, I may be getting a lot more involved than I expected as well, indeed I already am.
