Real Estate/Rental question
Blogslut Jr. is looking for an apartment. One of the listings she's interested in says the apartment features "high speed business internet".

That's gotta be code for something that's not as awesome as it sounds.

Anyone know what "high speed business internet" means in terms of apartment rental lingo?

1. It means remarkably what it sounds like...
a business-class high-speed internet connection. Faster than regular residential DSL/Cable, not as fast as a T-class connection. Usually will handle far more computers than a residential service connection without notable degradation.

If it's included, I certainly wouldn't turn it down.

2. Ah, thanks
Actually, on second look, the ad states:

"Free Business Internet"

As opposed to "High Speed Business Internet".

Do you think that means she'll be getting broadband in some form?

4. Probably...

it's not really a well-defined term...basically businesses get a better internet package because they pay a lot more for it, but it's not a standardized thing as to what that means.

Comcast's business package is not the same as Verizon's which differs from Cablevision's...ask to see the fine print to find out exactly what it means in this case. Generally though, business connections are faster and the provider makes, as someone else pointed out, a guaranteed uptime promise. Also, more bandwidth.

3. I believe the "business" part of the marketing refers to guaranteed up-time
This is totally a guess though. When I've had my home internet connection down and complained about it, the reply is always something about how it's not guaranteed because it's *only* a home/entertainment-type connection/account.

So, my deduction is that a *business* account would have a better policy when problems come up, such as immediate attention, etc.
