Is non-CGI animation going extinct?
I say if it does, it does.

When was the last time anyone made an animated black and white movie with the characters having rubber hoses for arms and legs, like they did in the 1920's and 1930's?

When was the last time anyone made a movie where the characters were rotoscoped?

When was the last time anyone made a silent animated short?

Did anyone lament when Disney invented the multiplane camera?

I enjoy the older shorts and movies, and I like the new ones with CGI.

2. I hope not!
Old fashioned 2D animation is a wonderful and beautiful art form. I'm of the opinion that The Lion King is the best animated film ever made, but I was a kid then so I am biased. :)

The stampede.

5. In this case CGI enhanced the movie.
Can you imagine animating that many (antelopes? wildebeasts?) by hand?

The sheer number in that stampede made young Simba's terror of being trampled all the more real.

12. Yes, almost certainly
Yet Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli continue to make features from hand rendered cels that are among the greatest movies -- movies, not just mere animations -- of all time.

13. More important, will 2D stick around?
2D can be cgi, saves a lot of labor.

Personally, I haven't seen anything in 3D that interested me enough to be tempted to watch it. Seems cutting-edge software can create all kinds of on-screen visual busyness, but can't enhance a story line. Memo to animators: good plots--needed; good characters--needed; bleeding-edge 3D cgi animation--meh.

14. It's still around
Japanese anime is still drawn by hand and doesn't use the ridiculous amount of CG western cartoons do these days.

16. However...
Cel-based animation in anime has been long dead. It has long since migrated to digital-based animation.

15. I'm surprised you're not aware of how recent rotoscoping has been used.
Just look at the wiki entry on rotoscope to see the most recent examples of full animated movies, and both are by Richard Linklater (Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly). I was already thinking of both of those titles without looking them up ;)
