I say that in the US, three people will be trampled or otherwise killed in the mad rush to be a consumerist, possession-obsessed douchebag.

I also predict 5 injured, and two fights-over-crap that will be big enough to warrant national news reporting.

Make your predictions, everyone!

Winner will be announced tomorrow afternoon.

2. Apart from time with family and enjoying dinner, the next best part is watching the assholes
for fuck's sake, I'm watching the news this morning, and there are people ALREADY lining up for tomorrow's mad rush to kill other people to save $20 on a TV.

3. You have to lay out the rules for a contest like that.
  • Is it closest without going over or closest in general or does one have to hit the number squarely to win?
  • What's the prize?
  • Do the old, infirm or children count? It seems like they shouldn't because they're less capable of surviving the crush.
  • Are we counting half-casualties? Do two broken necks equal one dead person?
  • Are there bonus points for mass-casualties? I think one should get more points for correctly predicting the annihilation of half a nuclear family at one time.

5. Hey the Walmart employee who was KILLED last year was an innocent casulty
He is was just a poor schmoe trying to make ends meet. I have worked retail on Black Friday and we all would rather be somewhere else. Believe me any one who has had to clean up after the inconsiderate crazed shoppers , man the cash register, assist people who blame you personally for ruining little Sally's and/or Johnny's Christmas because we sold out of the hottest toy, or passed out coffee at 5 am to the lines has a particular hate for Black Friday.

6. Oh I know...
I was one for years.

I like what my former employer did this year...they had a "lowest prices of the season" sale 4 weeks ago and again 2 weeks ago to beat the Black Friday rush. Nothing being sold tomorrow in their stores will be cheaper than it was on Nov. 14th or Oct. 30th. That was their promise. It drove sales up, beat the rush on shoppers and insured that we won't have a Walmart moment.

7. I worked retail, too - pain in the ass.
Loved it most of the time, except right around the holidays. The grocery store wasn't bad (though it was insanely busy!), but the retail store was a fucking nightmare. I HATED it. So many assholes; plus the company would put out ad flyers and coupons, and then not put the shit in the computer systems, or sometimes print a sale that was really a coupon but didn't look like one so the customer would come to the store for the "sale" and get pissed that they were supposed to have had a coupon...

fucking hated it.

So many assholes.

11. I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict something crazy.
One of these thre things:

Somebody will be shot and shoppers step over the victim to get into store

Somebody drives their car through a crowd of people outside a department store because they were so pissed off.

A group of shoppers knocks over a display containing something oily and messy resulting in fractured and broken limbs for people slipping in the mess and falling on their ass.

15. Considering our penchant for one-upmanship, I'm going with:
4 deaths, 17 injuries, and at least one shooting. Way more than last year.

I don't subscribe, but I'm picking up mail and papers for friends who are out of town.
Today's paper is chockablock FULL of flyers, coupons, BUY ME! BUY HERE! inserts.
