your opinion on the green bean/mushroom soup/fried onion casserole

I'm neutral on it. Don't love it. Don't hate it. It's okay, but I would rather have some nice steamed fresh green beans topped with some toasted almonds and/or sauteed fresh mushrooms.

Steam the beans with a little fresh Vidalia onion or just wrap them in a paper towel and microwave them and they are great. Leave that dried onion chemical trash in the supermarket.

To me, green beans are the best veggies and I can't believe that people eat them in that casserole. It's fake, just like nacho flavored Doritos are fake.

I just steam mine in the microwave and dig in. I've always loved them -- my best pal's parents (when I was a kid) thought I was weird because I loved them so much.

24. There is a great PA Dutch recipe for green beans - take about 4 pounds and

wash tnd pick off the stems (fresher is better), put them in a large pot with 2 or 3 potatos in chunks (fresh) a medium onion, diced, and some chunks of ham as much or little as you wish. Add about 1/2 cup of water, cover and simmer for about 2 1/2 hours till the potatos and beans are very tender. Don't add anything else - it will flavor itself.

One of the most simple and best things I have ever had to eat, great in the winter, and makes the whole house smell fantastic.
Read PA Dutch people sometimes add a little vinegar sprinkled on this when they eat it.

20. OMG! This debate has been raging in my household!

I'm in charge of the veggie sides this year and the dreaded "Green Bean" dish was mentioned in one discussion. Personally, I am lukewarm on it, my kid HATES it and hubby would rather die than eat it. My Mom absolutely loathes the dish and my brother "suggested" it.

This year I am doing steamed fresh Green Beans and anyone that wants to bitch about the missing casserole can head up the veggie committee NEXT year.

Now, if ONLY I had the same level of mental clarity on the candied sweet potatoes...

My husband and oldest daughter love them. I would rather eat a baked sweet potato without all the sweet stuff. So I make both. We have sweet potato pie, too.

We have never done the green bean dish. I have had it a few times. It is okay, but not a family tradition here.

29. Other...depends on how it's made...

I use frozen french cut green beans, let 'em thaw, and drain before doing anything else with them (cuts down on gloppiness).
This is the ONE TIME a year I'll use a canned soup.
My version also involves fresh mushrooms, onions, slivered almonds, and wine...
but no crunchy onions on top...can't stand 'em.

Of course, it's better if you mod. A good mushroom soup, fresh green beans, and carmelize your own onions instead of the canned Durkee stuff and you've rocked the dish.
