6. Usually frozen beans--or at least, that's what I use.
Two bags of frozen green beans. You can tell which ones they are because they are at most 32 degrees F and green. That usually fills the casserole dish--"casserole"--the name for the dish. Any dog's breakfast worth of stuff fitting into one also colloquially qualifies as a "casserole".

Bonus information: two types of onion are used--pearl onions, which never knew an oyster, and French's fried, which are actually American. (I've eaten French fried onions as a snack. I've heard that confession is good for the soul, so I thought I'd mention that. I'm not sure that it's helping me with my very random snacking issues, but I can report that they really are tastier than Funyuns. Also, Funyuns have a high saving throw against all breath fresheners. I like to give out tips!)

Also, I think there's a law that you can only use Campbell's mushroom soup in your green bean casserole due to highly complicated copyright issues. If you use some different mushroom soup, I recommend steaming the labels off of the cans before putting them in the recycling bin, and tossing out the labels separately.

8. Egads--Thanksgiving is hard enough on the digestive tract.
That recipe is the act of a Mad Kitchen Scientist.

(Not caring for "damp" stuffings, myself, I'd bake it outside of the bird in a large casserole dish and possibly add some bacon. The best thing about stuffing baked in a casserole is the chewy-cruchy burnt ends--they really go well with gravy!)

PS. The sea serpent is the crunchy stuff that's on the outside of the green bean casserole.

11. Haricots Vert.
A casserole is a one-pan entree meant to be an entire meal in itself, usually baked. Most casseroles are made up of some combination of a protein, a carbohydrate and one or more vegetables.

Any other questions?

14. Green beans
You might want to set cooks.com as a favorite, as they have very large collection of recipes. I used to like ichef.com, but I haven't looked there in a long time.

As someone explained, casseroles combine different elements that would normally be cooked on their own, and make them into a one-dish recipe.

Thinks like mac-cheese-hamburger
green bean casserole
tuna noodle casserole
sheperd's pie
baked ziti

stuff like that.

19. The original recipe (Campbells, that is) used canned French-style beans.
Now you have to use canned Freedom Beans.

No, seriously, I just saw the recipe published in with the coupons and now Campbells uses regular cut green beans instead of French style. Don't forget the onion crisp thingies.

20. "French style" string beans
Edited on Wed Nov-25-09 08:36 AM by meow2u3
You're supposed to use frozen, French style string beans to make string bean casserole. If you use canned, it will taste funny.

I make a variation of string bean casserole, with chicken added. Instead of cream of mushroom soup, I use cream of chicken soup. I call it chicken string bean casserole.
