Crap. I did something stupid.
Edited on Tue Nov-24-09 05:00 PM by arbusto_baboso
I lied about something to a couple people. It would have been just as easy to tell the truth at the time, but I didn't. I'm not sure exactly why.

In any case, I think one of the people suspects I lied to him, and will easily be able to prove it if he checks into things.

This is why I generally am scrupulously honest. I'm not a moral paragon or anything, it's just whenever I do anything dishonest, I'm invariably caught.

Suggestions? Yeah, I know, own up to the truth. I intend to. Any approaches that might work better than others?

1. I think owning up sooner is better than waiting to figure out how best to say it
and besides, the way you explained it here is probably going to sound more sincere than anything else.

if there was a good reason or justification that motivated you, it is something to bring up.

good luck. :hi:

2. I guess I was looking for a way to make it easier and/or less uncomfortable.
But there really isn't one.

3. if you alert them to it then that's better
better than them finding out from others.

or finding out by confronting you.

all that said, some lies are "white lies" and are done to spare someone's feelings and for that reason may be justified, but this sounds like something else.

9. No, not to spare someone's feelings. It's work related.
And it's concerning something that is rather emotionally charged in this office.

6. Um, were you slamming me or something?
Did I do something to you personally?

10. Okay. It just seemed like maybe you were. Not that I'm feeling defensive right now or anything....

11. Heehee thanks.
I've been in your spot a time or two over the years. Thank goodness it's been a while. Sometimes this stuff sorts itself out, and sometimes you have to egg on the outcome. Try to include a little humor if possible or appropriate.

I'm sure most people can relate and might be able to blow it off as 'just something people do from time to time'. Either way, you'll get past it and so will they.

:toast:

12. I hope so. One of the people involved is a real tight-ass.
Which may have been why I lied to him in the first place. Being honest with him usually doesn't bring good results, either.

5. Usually, I start the conversation with "Dude, I really owe you an apology.
There's no excuse and I'm not sure why I did it but ........ Sorry about that."

Then, if they get all pissy about it, I slug them in the gut.

:)

7. I like the last bit, but one of these people is a bodybuilder and physically inmtimidating.
That's one of the things making the necessary apology more difficult.
