I just joined Facebook - can somebody give me some protocol tips?
I put in my HS & college graduation years and it gave me some people from my high school class - is it appropriate for me to try to add them as friends, even if I haven't heard from some of them this century? (My HS graduation was 1985)

Thanks

1. I added friends from high school that I hadn't seen in 25 years, but
Edited on Tue Nov-24-09 11:43 AM by Lex
we were friends in high school. I haven't added anyone from high school just because they were in the same graduating class.

Best thing to do first is familiarize yourself with the privacy settings. It will make your FB experience MUCH more enjoyable.

5. My advice: add friends slowly and deliberately. People add friends in a big flurry
when they first join and suddenly realize that there are a lot of people they didn't really want to keep in touch with after all. And those always seem to be the people who update their status every two seconds with the most obnoxious stuff.

40. If you friend someone who posts too much

and it's stuff you really don't care to see you can always hide all of their posts. I have a close friend who is always posting right wing drivel so I just hide his posts. I can check his wall for any news about him. I hide pretty much all of the apps for the FB games. As mentioned before, take some time and familiarize yourself with the security settings. Have fun! :hi:

44. I yeah, I can do that with some people. But there are some people you want to dial back
a little bit (and you used to be able to on FB) but not completely hide them, and those are the ones that are tricky. Yeah, I hid all those games too. They drive me nuts!

23. I take care
To only add people I know...even if we have not spoken in some time you do reconnect.

Be careful about your status...some people update just to update...I usually do it to be snarky (and no one is ever surprised..it makes me sad no one ever is) :nopity:

Check your privacy settings (which has been mentioned) and if you want only some people to see something like pictures and videos..you can set different privacy settings for that!

Have fun with it!

27. If you have ANY employment aspirations
Imagine your potential employer reading your page. A lot of Facebook pages look like the person spends all fucking day there updating; not good. Also, anything ultra HIp might scare them away, like oh, I dunno, gansta rap shit and photos of everybody flashing signs.
Even political references have to be pretty vanilla because there's a 20% chance your potential employer is a big fan of Sarah Palin. I started one during the campaign because everyone on Team Obama had one and commmunicated that way. Now I'm stuck with it. My kids communicate with me there. I'm thinking of shutting it down because I'm doing a lot of finance and my client base is pretty Red State if you get my drift.

Better to take Richardo's advice.

30. Dive in, have fun, ignore everyone else's advice.
I've met people I haven't seen since 7th grade, and renewed old friendships, and talked to old girlfriends. I've found parts of me I didn't realize I'd lost. Make friends with everyone from your high school, sort out the bad ones later. One of my favorite people there now is a right wing religious nut I knew in high school because we can call each other all kinds of names and laugh about it. I had one bad experiene with an old college roommate, but it only reminded me of why I always thought he was a loser, anyway.

Okay, one tip. Don't use a password that you use on other sites. That place is too easy to hack, and then they'd have your password and email address, and other personal info, and that's enough to get through security on a lot of websites.

33. funny story on RW religious nuts
some woman a friend of mine dated back in college in the late 80s/early 90s was known for being rather not hard to have sex with. However, for some reason, they dated once or twice and she had to move or leave or go somewhere else - right before he was able to have sex. Well, she ended up finding him years later on FB, and since he was single, he was thinking it was finally going to be his chance - however, turns out she is now some born-again fundie nut.

35. Yeah, my class partiers all seem to be born agains, too. Funny thing, though,
one woman I dated was too conservative in high school and that's part of why I quit dating her. I could easily have married her, and at times in my life wish I had. She's now as liberal as me. If only I'd known.

It's a hoot to catch up with people. Some have never grown up. Some I thought were losers are rich and happy, while I, while always happy, have not done much with myself. And some I'm glad I didn't know in the intervening years. I think mostly I've felt happy to see them all again, but even happier I moved away from that place. :)

49. Those games are set up to make money, so be careful
Farmville, Mafia Wars, Sorority Life - they're all set up to suck you in thinking you're going to play for free, but be frustrating if you don't spend REAL money to buy virtual stuff (example: you can plow all day in Farmville for free, or buy a tractor with real money and keep on moving up). A friend sent around a link explaining the business model, and I'm too damed lazy to look for it right now.

Also, be prepared for "stalkers" - although my photos are all pretty innocuous, I've had people comment on photos that would have required a lot of looking-through to get to, making me wonder if they have too much time on their hands (sez someone posting in the DU Lounge.....) If it's there, bored people (or exes) are going to be looking at it!
