You know Mr. Carlson's line about "As God as my witness..."
Amusing, but not actually all that funny.

There. I said it.

2. You've got it backwards.
Carlson stabbed the barber when he asked "How's the Maytag repair business going?"

3. The much funnier part of that bit was Les Nessman's live radio call of the drop. n/t

4. I agree--that's the true heart of the joke
Carlson's line is a sort of after-the-fact opportunity to laugh again, but it gets all of the credit.

5. There's a YouTube clip of it
I'm surprised it's still there. Not a very good clip, though.

7. In comedy, timing is everything.
So it wasn't so much the line itself, but the timing in which it was delivered.

Nesmann's blow by blow report on the scene was hilarious as it built to a crescendo, but Carlson's simple line delivered to the stunned station crew was comedic timing perfection.

9. True - especially since (I think)
it came after commercial break & after the scene at the mall...they had cut back to the station and in walks Mr. Carlson.

10. Next you'll be saying that the ending to the original Planet of the Apes movie was predictable.
As if.
