I visited an historic cemetery in Maryland today near my home, and am unexpectedly haunted.
Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church cemetery in Silver Spring. It's on the grounds of land owned by Daniel Carroll, an historic figure himself and father of John Carroll, first Catholic archbishop in the U.S. (no, I'm not Catholic - just a history buff). Anyway, it was a beautiful day, and I've been meaning to wander the grounds, so did so. Oldest grave there that I saw was of Eleanor Carroll, wife of Daniel and mother of John, who was in her 90s when she died in the 1790s.

Anyway, I came across a small garden area with a little plaque giving the names and birthdates of Sheila and Katherine Lyon, who were 11 and 13 when, as the plaque indicated, they disappeared in April 1975.

When I got home I got online. I had no idea what a huge story this was in DC, one of the biggest ever - the Chandra Levy story of its time. And they have never solved it. Here's Wikipedia on this tragic story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyon_sisters

Like I said, haunting.

1. What a sad, sad story.
And of course, it's compounded many times over by the fact that they were never found, alive or dead.

As a parent, I ask myself what would have happened to my sanity if such a thing had happened to my children...How do you cope, or go on in any meaningful way?

I have no idea.

May those precious girls rest in peace.

2. Thanks. I can't believe how it affected me.
If you check it on line, you know how awful it was. I live here now, but wasn't here then. I know every inch of where this happened. Where I live is also the center of the sniper killings in 2002.

I don't think I'll retire here. Love the history, but not all of it, obviously.

3. I was living in the area at the time
and I have recently moved back to the area. I remember when it happened; it was incredibly frightening. The girls were about my age. I used to work with a woman who went to school with Kate. Their dad was a prominent radio personality at the time. He is now a grief counselor. Their older brother is now a detective.

To this day, I think about those girls frequently.
