T-minus 4 days till Turkey Family Fun Fest. What's your poison?
I'm thinking of a flask of rum to mix with with all the sodas that will be around the Puritan's table this Turkey Day.

How are you planning on coping with the family?

5. By not cooking a Tofurkey
because my older daughter the vegetarian isn't speaking to us. She emailed back to say she's not coming to dinner, so there's no point in my making the ghastly Tofurkey thing.
So far, my husband and younger daughter and possibly my brother are still speaking to me.

6. my sister is a vegetarian, and she always simply ate everything but the turkey
Edited on Sun Nov-22-09 08:46 PM by tigereye

it is never really a problem. She is ok with other people's food choices.

As far as dealing with my family, they are all pretty liberal Democrats, so I feel fortunate. I think I would have a hard time with conservative relatives, so I'm glad I don't have any.

9. My father is conservative, but I don't think you'd have a problem with him
as he doesn't bring politics up and is probably one of the nicest people you'll meet. Just don't antagonize him (as no one should do when they meet people anyway...) ;)

Other than a possible clash with my mother over me being in love with someone that's not in this country (her first comment when I told them about Maryanne was "Why can't you find someone over here?!" She's not xenophobic, just too old to accept the idea of long-distance love) the few days I'll be there probably won't be so bad. I'm vegetarian, too, but don't engage them in their eating habits and they all accommodate me nicely :)

11. well, most people don't force their views on others - I'm pretty tolerant of
most people even if their views are different from mine, since most people can manage to find some common ground. I suppose I was talking about the most rabid folks who are very intolerant of any differences and love to get in a conflict...

:D

12. I've worked with people like that,
and you either learn not to talk to them, or research something they don't like and beat them over the head with it :P

20. yes, I've debated guys selling the newspaper in the grocery store (often are
conservatives - weird - the non-union paper, of course), and one time a a guy working at a Long John Silvers debated me about my Clinton button.

:wtf:

21. The last time I talked to anyone at the grocery store
trying to sell me a subscription, I left him with a copy of The Houston Press (he'd never heard of it, yet it had been in publication at least 15 years by that time.) Houston's suburbs are notoriously conservative, and that was likely where he was from if he'd never heard of it. I left him with a smile of satisfaction on my face at maybe showing him there was quality reporting still going on out there :)

15. She sounds like a nice person
My daughter is quite the opposite. Last year I suggested trying Quorn rather than tofurkey, but she threw a fit.

We're all more or less progressive lefties.

17. when so many people around the planet have no food or clean water, it
Edited on Mon Nov-23-09 09:28 AM by tigereye
almost seems decadent to overdo concerns about food. I try very hard to buy and eat local foods, but also give money to the food bank. I also try to remember that we in America have the luxury of defining what our food tastes should be and that isn't an option for most people around the planet.

Have a nice holiday! btw my sister is a really cool person. She's been a vegetarian since the late 70s.

I have some homebrew Saison that is just now ready, my son went to the Sam Adams brewery to pick up some of their cask beers, and I'll have to see what my nephew has picked up.

We're going out. I will ask Mrs. V. to drive so I can enjoy two or three Blue Moons. :9

22. No kids..
They are with my sisters ex-husband for thanksgiving. We will have them for Christmas.

I bought a keg of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. We are going to BBQ with friends and avoid all the family bullshit. We will party and only use paper plates.

Thanksgiving usually manages to make my sister burst into tears. The mothers fight and criticize everything. This year they are not invited. We will BBQ and drink.
