I'm watching The Changeling on IFC . Some thoughts.
-One of the best horror movies ever filmed. The Exorcist. Alien. The Ring. Rosemary's Baby. The Changeling.

-The very good horror movie from 6 or 7 years ago, The Ring, was based on the Japanese movie Ringu. But nobody mentions how it was also based on The Changeling. Of all the changes they made from Ringu, most were based on The Changeling. The heavier mystery element. The Seattle locations. The extended scenes involving an old well.

-Some absolutely wonderful 70's era Seattle shots. There's the 1970's U-dub. There's a shot looking north from an office building downtown, of the Space Needle, before downtown really grew up. Some settings in northern Seattle, I'm guessing around Shoreline. You just don't see it anymore.

-There's an early seen where George C. Scott (I like him in this better than in Patton) bumrushes the evil Senator on Boeing Field. For the life of me, this movie was eerily prescient of the crazy ass Slade Gordon, who's loss was the absolute best thing to come out of election 2000.

-In a contemporary child's room, there's a B. Kliban poster. Does anybody out there remember B. Kliban?

1. I used to see B. Kilban's cartoons in the Playboys I stole from my brother in the 70's
I prefer George C. Scott in Anatomy Of A Murder (another film that's soaked in regional atmosphere), but The Changeling is one of my favorite performances by him, too. Melvyn Douglas in this, too..

2. Scariest bouncing ball EVAR!
I wish Hollywood made more movies that were less about shock and more about shivers.

3. I was obsessed with Kliban's cats as a teen; had every sort of merch that was available.
I haven't thought about that in years...

:hi:
