Today's College Football Thread
The biggest game today is probably Oregon at Arizona, since the PAC 10 title is still up for grabs and both of these teams can win it if they win their remaining games. The only game between ranked teams is between California and Stanford. Here are the other games with ranked teams today:

Early games
Minnesota at 13 Iowa
Duke at 20 Miami
Florida International at 1 Florida
Chattanooga at 2 Alabama
10 Ohio State at Michigan
Memphis at 24 Houston

Afternoon Games
4 TCU at Wyoming
8 LSU at Ole Miss
14 Penn State at Michigan State
NC State at 15 Virginia Tech
16 Wisconsin at Northwestern
19 Oregon State at Washington State
San Diego State at 24 Utah
Air Force at 22 BYU
Virginia at 23 Clemson

Evening Games
Kansas at 3 Texas
11 Oregon at Arizona
25 Cal at 17 Stanford

So what games are you looking forward to today?

1. Arizona State vs UCLA
I'm sure it's considered a snoozer to the general football world but both teams need a win to stay eligible especially ASU. They need to win today and beat Arizona while UCLA can afford to lose just one game but they have USC after us.

I was starting to get worried this thread wouldn't come. :)

52. Their season is over
You won't believe this given the final score but UCLA didn't score any touchdowns on offense. It was two defensive touchdowns that made the difference. The rest was field goals. 4 turnovers to 0.

However I feel optimistic about the future. They had a really good recruiting class last year so they are young but talented. Vontaze Burfict will likely go down as one of the best Arizona State defenders in history as he is a true freshman and is there leading tackler. Samson Szakacsy has looked wonderful in his first start in his collegiate start and he is pretty accurate and has good mobility. Gerrelle Robinson as a true freshman receiver has played well.

While they're no rumors of the sort I hope they don't fire Dennis Erickson after this season. I haven't seen such an injury riddled team in my life especially on the offensive line where they had 6. Lou Groza Award winner as missed most of the season and he has done a solid job with all that. Plus he is an excellent recruiter so give him some time to work with this recruiting class.

Now even though they're not bowl eligible they still have the "Duel in the Desert" which is a game they can win if they limit the turnovers. Samson Szakacsy is playing well so for the first time this season I'm not worried about QB play. However it will be very tough.

Final score:UCLA 23, Arizona State 13. UCLA's offense:3 field goals, no touchdowns. UCLA's defense:2 touchdowns.

2. Oklahoma is at Texas Tech today
Mike Leach can become the winningest coach in Texas Tech history if he wins today, but he's never had much luck against the Sooners.

10. well, they've had a bit better luck the last two times in Lubbock
I guess they're 2-2 in Lubbock since Leach took over, but OU has outscored them overall and both of the wins have had particular circumstances. In 2007 they won by a touchdown after Sam Bradford got knocked out of the game with a concussion in the first quarter. (Not on a hit by Texas Tech, but trying to make a tackle after an INT, IIRC.) In 2005 they won by two points after a disputable touchdown on the last play of the game. (I'm not saying the win was illegitimate, though.)

Right now the Red Raiders are up 10-6 in the second ...

Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 01:55 PM by JonLP24
Where when it's in Norman it's not even close(or it seems that way). That's really what I meant knowing the won a coupe of times at Lubbock. I watched a little bit during the halftime of OSU-Mich and saw the TT touchdown. If it stays in Ohio State's favor I'll switch to that game. ASU-UCLA is scheduled to be on the same channel(Fox Sports Arizona) as OU-TT as soon as that game ends.

Their defense has dominated our O-Line, and while our defense has had a few good moments, their offense has kept us guessing thus far. I hope Oklahoma can find some rhythm soon.

TE makes a nice gain into FG range but fumbles. That's ok ASU stops UCLA and forces a punt. However next play Szackszy(spelling?) ASU QB fumbles and UCLA returns for a touchdown. On the kickoff return man fumbles and UCLA is likely going to get a FG out of this.

20-7 UCLA Halftime. :banghead:

12. The real season starts today
That's right, campers! Playoffs, and the only legitimate way to determine the national champion. The mighty Linfield Wildcats host Cal Lutheran in the first round. The teams have met twice before in the playoffs, each winning once. Those who were there in Thousand Oaks will never forget Linfield's fourth quarter collapse to fritter away a 28-10 lead in their 29-28 loss, aided and abetted by a bogus fumble call on a swing pass. Linfield beat Cal Lu 20-16 in 1982 on their way to the National Championship. The rubber match has been 27 years in the making, and Linfield's more than ready to put paid to Kingsmen. Louie, Louie - you gotta go now!

Yale ahead 10-7, about 3 minutes to go in 4th quarter, 4th down and 22 needed for 1st down on their own 25 or thereabouts.
They faked the kick and ran the ball.

Two years ago they sat next to Jane Pauley and Gary Trudeau.

44. It's interesting about the 1968 Game.
My first husband was a Harvard man and I was on a train from our town in Westchester County into Manhattan to meet him at the Harvard Club midtown. The game was finished by the time I got there and in those days, with no cell phones, I had no idea what had happened. I was startled to see all these people standing on tables and cheering at the sedate Harvard Club...

Doonesbury is actually Charlie Pillsbury, who was Trudeau's roommate at Yale. Charlie just retired from a nonprofit he sponsored that provided mediation services. Charlie, a scion of the Pillsbury company, was its major benefactor. He devoted his life to his cause.

Now I live in New Haven and have remarried and I support Yale...I have been to way too many Harvard-Yale games...

I attended a couple of summer 'just for fun' seminars at Yale back in the early 80s. "International Security and World Order" is one I remember.
I was living in southern NH at the time.
Wonder if they still have those.

A close friend's son was at Yale in the 80s and we'd went to a couple of Y-H games.
The tailgating was fantastic.

My son-in-law was class of 93.
He's an attorney in Boston now.
Anyway, I root for Yale.

56. Texas whistled into Royal-Memorial this evening.
They're up by three touchdowns, but they looked like they were busy tying their shoes during the first half.

57. Let me give a big HELL YEAH to Ole Miss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course Miss LDK (my baby girl) wore her good luck charm. She was sporting her Ole Miss cheerleader outfit. They have yet to lose when she wears it when they play. I do get tired of her wearing it on Saturdays, so there was a couple of times when she didn't wear it, and of course, they lost. But this was a HUGE game for them. And a good game at that. So, HOTTY FREAKIN TODDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

59. Let me thank the Big Ten for providing a really fun season to watch
Many, many games were close and had to be watched clear to the end. The league as a whole is fairly balanced from top to bottom.
So while there may not be a national title in the offing, I always hated those blowouts we used to have every Saturday in the 60s to the 90s.
It is so much more fun to watch a game like Northwestern 33 - Wisconsin 31.
