Vienna or Verona?
Or both?

My best friend from the US is coming to visit us for the Christmas holidays and we brainstorming where we should take him while he's here. I'm leaning towards Verona, Italy because the last time he was here we took him to Saltzburg, Austria. They are both about the same distance (about 4 hours) from Munich.

Which one would you prefer?

BTW, Herr Herr prefers Vienna.

1. They're both nice,
but since she/he already seen Salzburg, I'd suggest Verona this time. Different country, and lots of cool stuff to see there, including the arena. Too bad the opera season is already over, because attending an opera in the arena is a cool tourist thing to do.

3. I'm thinking the same thing
He's already been to Austria so why not take him to Italy this time? Damn that opera season is over. That would be most excellent!

5. The Verona open opera is not my thing,
although I love operas (I saw Don Giovanni in Vienna,) but I know that anyone who attended there just loved it.

It's a close call; both cities are very nice and have their special appeal, but Verona has that Mediterranean feeling to it, and I think it's a special treat to see lots of Roman architecture, while Salzburg has the same like Vienna does.

10. He is all into Roman architecture
that might be the tipping point. Plus he just said he would like to walk into a store and ask "hey, yousa gotta tutti fruitee ice cremea for mea?" He's already insulted the Austrians.

12. Well,
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 12:44 PM by Call Me Wesley
just get him a fake CIA ID card, and let him show it to everyone there. That might get funny! "Ima a CIAa, kidnapping youza." Last I've heard, Italian prisons aren't ranking as the nicest ones ... ;)

And he can run around in the arena, pretending to be a gladiator.

But, ice cream in December? :eyes:

We're going to wear back packs with the Canadian Leaf emblem to disguise ourselves but I know he will fuck it up somehow and expose us as the arrogant Americans we are by insisting on Ice Cream in December. Either that or demanding McDonalds. "whatsa matta for you? Where's mya Mickie deasa. I'm nota loving thisa!"

16. So I was right,
he wants to pretend to be a gladiator? Then go to Rome. It's only 5 Euros to get a picture with this guy:

Of course, if he wears the same costume, standing outside the Verona arena, he might get 5 Euros everytime some tourist wants to have a picture taken with him. Hey, just an idea!

2. My dear theNotoriousP.I.G.!
Ah, Vienna!

Could there be a more perfect place?

Especially if it's snowing...

Somehow, I don't associate the warmer climate towns with Christmas...

I guess that's because our descriptions of the holiday all look European!

I'm with Herr Herr on this one...

I'd want you to take me to Vienna if it were I who was going to be your guest...

;)

If you ever get back over here, I will take you to Vienna, I promise!

Thanks for your opinion...we shall see.

If your friend likes Roman architecture, and has already been to Austria with you, go to Verona.

What does your friend want to do?

friend, mr. comfy pants, are leaning towards Italy. HerrHerr, who knows more than we do, i.e. weather, taxes for driving on different countries' roads, train ticket prices, etc. is leaning towards Vienna. I'd love to go to Rome but that is more involved than we have time for.

hippywife. It is possible. You'd be surprised how much money is in the change jars and you've got a friend in me located in Europe to be your base. There are websites for people who want to travel to Europe and Europeans who want to travel to the US and you can house swap.

Right now we are saving for a car camping trip to the Grand Canyon and then on over to Yosemite. The husband really has his heart set on Yosemite since he's never been there. He's been to the Grand Canyon when he was a kid, but I've never been. So... We really have to save a lot because he doesn't get paid vacation, either.

And I don't know that too many Europeans are chomping at the bit to live in a little tiny homemade house in rural Oklahoma.

28. We do have a lot of natural wonders
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 04:14 PM by hippywife
here, thankfully, and I do want to see them. Alaska has long been on my list, too. But Italy represents my heritage and I'm only the third generation from my family who came to America from there. It would mean a lot to be able to go even just once.

I'm always thankful for PBS programming since that's the only way I can afford to visit far away places.

How did you end up in Germany?

31. I hope you make it one day to your ancestor's land:
America is so beautiful, naturally speaking, than a lot of places in Europe, but there is something to be said for the history of this place. The city I live in, Munich, just turned 900 years old and there are still traces of medieval life here. But the natural beauty of America still calls me home.

I ended up in Germany by marrying a German man.

We Watch BBC to explore Asia...so we are always looking outward for something. I think it is the human condition.
