I just realized something horrible this morning.
Remember that group of older guys that always seemed to be at the local diner or coffee shop whenever you went there for breakfast with your Dad, when you were a kid?

You know, the 'good 'ol boys'?

I am now one of those guys.

Whenever I'm in town, every Wednesday for lunch at one place, and every Sunday, breakfast at another; more or less the same bunch of guys.

This morning it was me, a guy that owns an auto body shop, an electrical contractor, three different excavating and hauling company owners, a restaurant owner, a heavy truck towing and repair shop owner, an auto repair shop owner, a sand and gravel guy, the county coroner, an undertaker, two farmers, and a retired guy.

The only guys not singing the blues are the coroner, the undertaker, and the retired guy.

The rest of us are all looking at the wrong end of it, just kind of bumping along.

1. You need a "GET OFF MY LAWN" T-shirt to wear when you go to lunch
Grrr.

3. Sad part is, I'm one the 'New Guys', because I've only lived here for
53 of my 54 years.

Many of the other guys have family roots back to the first white settlers in this county.

I can still claim to be 'the kid'.

5. Curiously, I live about 10 miles from our ORIGINAL family homestead from the early 1700's
I didn't know this when I moved into the area, but my mother's side of the family settled on the other side of the river in the early 1700's. Weird, eh?

2. My dear Ikonoklast...
And you need those guys, just as they need you...

You can all lean on each other during the hard times, and celebrate in the good times...

This is a good thing!

4. Peggy, some of these guys have millions tied up in assets or land,
depending on their businesses, but are still looking for ways to generate enough income to keep their guys employed and pay the bills.

Funny thing is you'd never know it, we all look like a bunch of beat-up bums most of the time, dirty boots, grease-stained jeans, ragged shirts...just a bunch of (mostly) blue-collar shmoes.
