Yes, I was one of the lemmings that went to the movies at 10 a.m. this morning. After all, I am a romance author, and we are all agog over the success of Stephenie Meyer.
"New Moon" began showing at midnight last night. One of the employees at Redmond, WA's Bella Bottega theater told me that they had six screens running the movie; the line stretched almost half a mile outside the building and down the street before they began seating people. All six midnight shows were sold out. He wasn't working the 3 a.m. showing, so he couldn't report on what happened there. The show at 10 a.m. wasn't sold out, but we emerged when the movie was over to face a huge line of people for the afternoon showings. I don't think there was anyone under 30 in the theater for the morning show today.
The movie: Some of the dialogue was really flat. Of course, Edward's dialogue was amazing, and his hair was wondrous. Poor guy. The cinematography is VERY good. The CGI? Meh. Vampires fighting was good. The huge wolves were, well, huge. The location shots at La Push were beautiful. Most of the movie was shot in Vancouver, BC, so snaps to everyone there. The movie is action interspersed with parts that drag. The guy that plays Bella's dad is a riot. Dakota Fanning stole every scene she was in.
One more thing: I have never felt older than I did this morning. Taylor Lautner is beautiful. The camera loves him, and his bulging biceps, and his six-pack. My God. I felt like Mrs. Robinson. It was also enlightening to gaze upon Rob Pattinson's torso, which is as marvelous as his hair. I have to keep repeating to myself that I'm old enough to be their mother.
Caution: If you haven't read "New Moon" or "Twilight", don't go till you read them, or the movie will make NO sense.
On the whole, I'd give it a B.
