Trying to remember a movie: Satan reborn on Earth, or something like that

There was this movie about a guy who would turn into Satan or Satan's son or something like that when he reached a certain age and then destroy the world. I thought Joaquin Phoenix was in it but imdb doesn't list anything like that for him. There was this woman helping him and people out to try and kill him, and she believed that he had a choice and didn't have to turn evil. The last scene is the two of them sitting in a car together waiting for the moment to arrive. When it does, she looks at him to see if he's evil and he claims he isn't but then he smirks and so she shoots him dead.

I've been thinking about that movie a lot and I'd like to see it again. Anybody know it?

Thanks! Winona Ryder? I don't remember HER. I do remember the scene now where they discover somebody has painted a pentagram in the apartment below his, just beneath his bed. I don't remember it being awful. I think I'll get it on Netflix. Thanks guys!
