Very cool, old, lip-synched B&W vintage clip:

1. have you ever watched "Record Row" about the South Michigan Avenue record companies
Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 12:39 AM by abq e streeter
narrated by Jerry Butler ( if my THC and age-addled memory serves me right). Includes of course Gene Chandler as one of the hitmakers from Vee-Jay records. Interesting history of the smaller but still vibrant Chicago soul music scene .

3. No, I will have to make a mental note of that one...
...I'm a big fan of "smaller but still vibrant"...a perfect example of that is the way that the majority of people refer to ANY 1960s soul music as "Motown," regardless of the source. Of course I love all of the mainstream Marvin/Smokey/Junior Walker/ETC "actual" Motown songs, but the "Philly" stuff...Al Wilson's "Show & Tell," Billy Paul's "Me & Mrs. Jones," Lou Rawls' "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine"...like you said "smaller but still vibrant."

Then at the next level you had guys like Brenton Wood and such, solo performers and groups that belonged to God-Knows-What-Label, but "Gimme Little Sign" has one of the greatest hooks I've ever heard in my life. Not such a fan of his other hit, "Oogum Boogum"...too much of a "novelty hit."

8. It gets shown on PBS during the fund raisers occasionally--pretty interesting
also--re: Brenton Wood--if you can ever find this...he did a cover of, believe or not, Psychotic Reaction, and the whole thing is just his vocals plus a "psychedelic" organ part ( once again IF my memory is accurate; turning into a bigger and bigger IF all the time), recorded over the original tracks by The Count Five.

4. I put that song in the same category as The Originals' song "The Bells"...
...written by Marvin Gaye. They had two major Motown hits, bith written and produced by Marvin (the other was "Baby I'm For Real"). Here's "The Bells"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ5ZWEKiEJk

Then, of course, what would the world be without The Spinners' "It's A Shame" (co-written by Stevie Wonder)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHXFOUQBRHE

...and Al Wilson's "Show And Tell"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTsAFA6jxsQ

...and Junior Walker's "What Does It Take"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0xzcavGrj4

...and Marvin's "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDWK5IANPWo

...and OF COURSE, Stevie's "My Cherie Amour"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OlG2ek-wzs

I think the real love songs are the ones where the guy just loses it, you know, just "It's YOU baby, it could NEVER be anyone else"...

...I remember an extremely cornball moment on the Cosby spin-off "A Different World." Kadeem Hardison is like a SPLIT SECOND away from losing Jasmine Guy, and even though it's a blatant rip-off of "The Graduate," he just yells out "Baby, PLEASE..."

That's what love sounds like to me, anyway. These songs. "Baby, please." That's all. Just take my hand and walk with me through my dukedom.

"No one else in the whole wide world...just you girl..."

7. great--go ahead and rub it in; Johnny is coming here on Dec.11th, and I have a gig
the same night at a place I don't particularly like, with a band that's not that good, and just so-so money, and is the only Friday I have booked this whole December.......but am already committed to it....DAMN....... Been a Johnny Rivers fan for 45 years and never seen him....P.S.....speaking of my short( and medium etc) term memory loss....have I already posted ( some weeks, or more, back) the story of my encounter with the guy that wrote Slow Dancing? ( Jack Tempchin)
