something that no longer exists: a liberal Republican. A strong proponent of the New Deal and friend of FDR, he was commonly known in his time as The Conscience of the Twenties.

You can learn all about him: (He's one of the few people who I think has a fairly-great Wikipedia page in terms of a brief overview.)

Edit: He along with Theodore Roosevelt is one of my heroes. Angry conviction-filled politicians who did the right thing consistently over pragmatic objections from both the opposition and within their own parties.

I figured if I gave him the hard one he'd figure out the easy one himself...since I stopped just short of telling him by pointing out that they were good friends.

Still...I'm concerned that if I went and stood in front of the Library of Congress and polled random DC residents that most also could not ID FDR.
