Can someone tell me can traffic tickets from another state sent by mail be enforced?
I got a toll violation from Colorado for a toll I am sure I don't owe (I live in Texas).

It was for a toll for $1.50 cents. Since I was sure it was a mistake I ignored it. Now I am suddenly getting these "civil fines" for $150 plus, of course, the $1.50.

I called Colorado transporation people and they said there was nothing that they could do and that I had to pay it. I said that I had never run any kind gate on any tollroad and they told me that it was a tollroad without toll booths that you had to have a pass for. But I was on vacation in Colorado!

This is bs. Any ideas?

This is stupid. I'm not a big fan of Texas but at least we have booths to pay and you can really easily and quickly understand that you have to pay the toll, or the gate doesn't go up.

My son skis in Colorado everyear and will be skiing there this Christmas, but if Colorado continues to treat me like shit we'll be finding another state to ski in.

1. They don't have booths on most new toll roads in TX
I advise to send them their $1.50 before you try to renew your license.

2. Some years back, I had a warrant out for my arrest over an unpaid traffic ticket.
It was just a speeding ticket, and for like 11 mph over the limit. I didn't pay it on time. Not only was I wanted in the state of Connecticut, but because of that I was also wanted in my (then) home state of New Hampshire. I had to personally appear at the courthouse in CT to pay the fine in order to have the warrant lifted. I still wonder what would have happened if I had been pulled over on the way there!

4. Probably. Now, on these toll roads, today, they use a pass, which
you must have. And they are clearly marked here. And separate lanes. Here they include a big fine for not having the pass.
The reason for the pass is that it takes a lot of money to have a person sitting at a toll booth, collecting tolls, and it also stops the traffic, and the traffic backs up for miles, they waste gas, cause additional air pollution, etc. So it is better, easier, cheaper for all concerned to have the tolls collected with the pass.
If the pass doesn't work, or if you don't have the pass, the camera takes your photo, and they send you the bill, or here, the fine.
You could ski in Utah. But do you think it will be different there?

5. i had that happen to me once because the road way was confusing
i drove through an ipass lane and i didn't mean to but due to confusion/traffic i did.

i emailed the DOT in the state i did it and I explained my situation. they were very nice and I just sent them a check for the actual toll value.

no fine.

6. Were you near the airport?
There are no "booths" there but there are cameras. They take a picture of the car/plate and send you a bill.

9. I have two co-workers who can't get their license for that, and another who was arrested.
The one who was arrested was for a ticket in-state. The other two both ignored tickets from other states, and by the time they went to renew their license, there were warrants and huge additional fines, and they can't get their licenses without a lot of legal fees.

Call them, ask how much you can send, see if they'll wave penalties, and all that. But don't ignore it any longer. States are very strict about toll roads these days. Here in Texas the toll roads are run by private companies who have enough clout to force the state to change speed limits on main roads to tempt drivers into using the toll roads. They will surely fight for every toll fee they can get.

And Texas has a lot of tollways without booths. Those are the most common type in Austin.

13. The state of Florida took away my Ohio license while I lived in Rhode Island
Or so they said. I was caught speeding while in Florida on vacation.

Nothing ever happened. This was many years ago. The document from the State of Florida was very officious, and it looked great where I thumb-tacked it to my apartment wall. Many states did not have reciprocal agreements back then, and the situation now might be specific to your state.
