Poll question: How many days should there be in a week?
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 03:21 AM by eppur_se_muova
The only reason there are seven days in a week -- or even weeks AT ALL -- is because of numerology/mythology; Genesis says there are seven days, so the whole world is stuck with a seven-day week which doesn't divide either a month or a year very well. A month is closer to 29.5 days, so either 5 or 6 days would seem a better choice.

Longer weeks have the advantage that we can give up one workday/week without it representing such a large change. Right now the traditional work week is five eight-hour days. Shortening the work week by a day would cut work hours by 20% -- maybe a bit too much, unless workdays were increased past eight hours. A ten-day week would not have this disadvantage to such a large degree.

Other choices in the list might be favored by people with extra fingers/hands.

3. Not much effect on me - I'm retired and seldom know what day it is anyway
But I'd advocate a metric week-6 work days, 4 consecutive days off.
FWIW, I worked as a temp at a place that worked 4 10 hour days, then had 3 days off every week...people loved it and seemed healthier for it.
I don't think workers get enough rest with just 2 days off a week.
Sadly, unions hate this idea - any more than 8 hour days makes them crazy.

4. We could still do that by switching to a French standard:
32-hour work week :D

I've worked 4-10s, too, and always loved them. Managers didn't for some odd reason. I guess they are so set in their ways that getting them to bend the least amount is next to impossible...

5. I don't know, but I wish we could make it...
... so that the dates of the month are always the same day. For example, the first would always be a Sunday, the second would always be a Monday, etc.

It would also be nice if each of the months had the same amount of days.

6. Well, obviously we count time wrong anyhow.
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 04:24 AM by Jamastiene
Our orbit is not a perfect 360 degrees around. So, our time should not be counted in 360 degree increments. We could do away with Leap Day, Leap Year, that stoopid DST, and the concept of weeks altogether if we recalculated what our orbit's shape really is and made new and better clocks based on that. Mother Nature is not round. She's elliptical.

Screw weeks. Who needs them? They just get in the way when we want something and move out of the way fast when we are dreading something. When somebody dies, they say the autopsy results will take weeks. When businesses squeeze us for money, they give us so many weeks to pay or else.

And my biggest pet peeve with weeks is that a "Blue Moon" should be when the Moon has that blue haze and halo around it, not when there are 2 Full Moons in a month. Screw that. We count time wrong. There are not 2 Full Moons in a month. The Full Moon should be considered the beginning of the new month, or the exact middle, depending on who you ask. The Moon should decide how long a month is, not some stupid clock or calendar, because the Moon controls everything anyhow.

Our entire concept and system of counting time is wrong. That's the problem. For the record, I voted we don't need no stinking weeks.

Fuck it. I'm starting a Moon cult. We'll count time based on the Moon and dance nekkid in the woods every night of the year.

13. The moon is receding from the earth approximately 2 inches per year
So, unfortunately, that would not solve the time problem.

14. That could be calculated into the equation
for measuring time. Then, it would work.

10. What about the Lennon-Macartney week?
You know the one ... Eight days a week, I lo-o-o-o-ove yoo.

Though they clearly thought it was a less-than-perfect solution, because ... Eight days a week, is not enuff to show I care.

12. 7 divides a year pretty well -- and lots of people can't remember new year's eve anyway
so 7*52 = 364 is almost perfect for them

Damn sure don't want to see it either. I'd be giddy if I never saw a clock again.
