my husband bought me a can of worms for christmas.
ok, so he told me he had found me the perfect gift, and was going out last saturday to take care of it. ok. i guessed he had bought me a piece of art. i was just hoping it was something i would like.
well, i got a call from the artist, a dear friend, saying thank you for buying it. so, the cat is out of the bag. it is a beautiful drawing from a show that we saw together.
but here is the problem. the artist and her husband are both dear friends. i mean really dear. the husband has been a painter forever, making a living as a park district art teacher. he is retired now, and trying to get his stuff out there. he had a piece in the show as well. his work is very good, and often quite funny, but not the style that makes me go ooooooo. competent. realistic. but not the kind of emotional grabber that grabs me.
the wife is a graphic designer, and although she does a lot of drawing, she has not, to my knowledge, put much effort into selling her work. i was kinda surprised to see her in this show.
although i loved the work when i saw it, and talked about how much i love her style, i didn't really consider buying it. i thought it would be kind of insulting to her husband to buy a piece of hers, never having bought anything of his. it felt like choosing between them, something i could not possibly do.
but he went and did it.
oy.

1. All husbands need to learn that there are certain things that you DO NOT..
..buy for your wife.
Appliances: "Aww, gee honey..the Vacuum cleaner is real nice...you can sleep with it tonight"
Dishes, Clothes: (oh, it fit's like a glove..A catchers mitt)
Shoes: "Jesus Christ Honey!! Do I look like I wear a size 11 ??"

Art: Huh..Huh..It's beautiful ...I'll put it right above the Washer and dryer.

4. One year before Christmas I took my daughter to a gallery and pointed to three paintings.
I said I like this, this, and this. For Christmas I received two of them, for my birthday I was presented with the third. Children can be quite helpful. My husband never knows what to buy for me, so we arrange a little help.

It works. :)
