A 26-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday and charged him with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 9-year-old Oscar Fuentes in his family's Columbia Heights apartment, two law enforcement sources said.

The suspect, identified as Josue Pena, was taken into custody on Drexel Street in Hyattsville just before 6 a.m., said the sources, from the District's Metropolitan Police Department. No additional details of what led to the arrest were immediately available.

Oscar, who was killed Saturday by a bullet that pierced the door of his family's apartment, was remembered at a vigil Monday night as a typical 9-year-old.

When he lived with an older cousin in the District, he was known to run outside at the sound of a bouncing basketball, the cousin said. Friendly? You bet. Annoying? At times.
