I ate dog food this morning -- no wonder Teddie doesn't like it!

I usually feed my dog home made wet food (mostly chicken, liver, green bananas, potatoes, carrots and rice -- generally stuff going "off") mixed with dry food kibbels (because the dog food companies make me paranoid about not giving him all the nutrients he needs).

So this AM I only had kibbel handy and put it in his bowl, and he looks at me like, WTF, not this shit again?

So for the first time I thought, maybe I should taste it -- just one kibble won't kill me right? Maybe he doesn't like it because it doesn't taste good.

Well I tasted it. It tastes like cardboard, with an ever so slight smokey after taste.

Why would any dog eat that crap?

Depends on the brand I think but most dog food is made out of animal carcass remains such as lungs, ligaments, bones, intestines, etc. There is also other health issues attached to dog food.

I never feed mine dog food. I do feed them a very similar diet, rice, chicken, liver, small chopped carrots, etc.

I have nothing against what they call the "naughty bits," and in fact, I really like some of them -- cow stomach soup (tripe, or tripa), pigs feet, liver, sweet breads, even kidneys in steak and kidney pie. So the organs they use doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that they often use contaminated or rotten stuff.

Do you worry about not feeding the dog a balanced diet? I think they've made us paranoid because dogs, like all other animals, are able to eat a wide variety of foods and get good nutrition. There was a vet who used to post in the Pets Group who emphasized how important it was to feed commercial feed, but I wonder.

On the other hand, I noticed that my dog kept stealing my son's Ramen noodle wrappers (my son seems to be on a Ramen addiction/craze) and it suddenly occurred to me, Ramen is really, really salty and I don't add salt to his homemade wet food, and maybe he's seeking out salt! I put salt on his food and he devoured it with unusual gusto.

It's that kind of thing that worries me and makes me continue to add commercial dog food.

5. I try to feed them a balanced diet

with protein, nutrients, and vitamins two meals a day to avoid overfeeding. I can't remember much it was awhile ago when I came across about dog food and some possible health issues related to dog food and if I did purchase some it would have to be a reputable brand that a vet recommends. I guess depending on the advice you don't need a dog food so I looked up ways on how to prepare meals suitable for dogs.

I did that once and I started turning around and around before I took naps plus my co-workers didn't approve of me smelling their butts when I came into the office.

Just what do the local animal shelters and a lot of vets do with the millions of beloved and unwanted critters that we have to put down....They send the remains of these Dogs and Cats to rendering plants that process this stuff into Dog and Cat Food.....Thats Right,a lot of (But not all) Criiter foods are part Canine and Feline!!

Flavorings....Try Excrement,thats right....Shit!

My puppy has a sensitive stomach and this seems to work for her (plus it taste so good even the cats like it)) Also it is made in Texas (providing good jobs)and they only use meat from the surrounding area (again supporting American business and lowering the ecological impact of transporting the meat) They refuse to sell to big boxes (they only sell online or to indie petstores) ! It is so rare to find a product that fits with my political philosophy sometimes!

13. Once had a dog food sandwich

maybe close to 50 years ago.....
My grandfather lived with us and he always made my lunch.
One day he mistook the leftover 1/2 a can of dog food in a container for ham salad.

I sure did not.
It tasted NASTY.
When he realized it he immediately apologized and all that stuff, but alas it became a family
joke for qutie some time....

a co-worker came in and said his wife had served canned corned beef hash the night before and they thought it tasted really funny
Mrs co-worker went to the garbage to check the can to be sure to never buy that brand again
All she found was two empty dog food cans, one for the dog and.....

17. My dog was asking for vegetables the other night.

I was eating steamed broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower. He was hanging out so I gave him a carrot and he carried it off. Came back in a minute and I gave him broccoli. Came back again and I gave him a cauliflower.

Walked across the room to his rug and it was all there. He licked the melted cheese off and didn't eat the veggies. That's the last time I try that. He doesn't like apples or peanut butter either.

My dog likes meat, poultry, fish...dead or alive.

I experimented with different kibble until I found one that he will eat any time right after I put it in his bowl. His favorite has lamb in it. I wouldn't eat it myself though.
