Least amount of screen time for a best actor or actress Oscar winner?
Just watched "Shine" and noticed that apart from a couple brief scenes, the "adult" Helfgott story doesn't start until about an hour into the film. Noah Taylor's younger Helfgott carries the first part of the movie and really sets up the emotional tone of the film. So, Rush won for Best Actor for about half a movie, maybe 45 minutes total.

So, being too lazy to go through the best actor and actress lists online, can anyone recall a shorter amount of screen time that resulted in an Oscar win?

1. How about Brando in "Apocalypse Now"?
He wasn't onscreen much and I think, though I'm not sure, that he won an Oscar for his role. He deserved one no matter what. He played an excellent seemingly crazy man.

3. That wasn't an act.
He was pretty far 'out there' during the filming, IIRC.

5. Yes, Brando's character dominates the film, despite being onscreen a short time
but he won the Oscar for The Godfather, but sent an Apache woman in his place who refused the award on his behalf...

Brando wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Apocalypse Now though... actually, Robert Duvall was nominated for best supporting actor, and his screen time is relatively short, too.

2. Anthony Hopkins.
His performance in "Silence Of The Lambs" is so unforgettable it is hard to believe that he is on screen in that film for only about 16 minutes.

9. Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou (1965).
It's a long time since I saw that film but I seem to remember that he won Best Actor Oscar for what was essentially a supporting role.

12. I am trying to remember who the actor was what told me about
working with Bogart, I believe. He was saying (Bogart?) would give away his lines. He would go to the other actors and say, this line, here, why don't you take that line, so that he ended up with this very tight lipped persona, enigmatic, man of few words.
And thus attractive to theater audiences.
I like Shakespeare. Plenty of lines.

13. Was it Ben Johnson (?) in "TheLast Picture Show"?
Also too lazy too look it up. It was barely more than a cameo.
