got one of his first jobs (notary) because of his impeccable handwriting?

Fat chance anyone would get that kind of job today.

2. Somewhat legible and a good defense against fraud
If you just squiggle someone who steals your checks will be harder to catch if they have actual handwriting samples to compare it with.

I've known of banks refusing to cash checks that didn't match the signature they have on file.

3. A squiggle now.
I used to sign forms (QC reports) all the time. That'll ruin any legibility.....
