Does Hip-Hop/Rap remind anyone else of lyric poetry found in traditional cultures?
In many traditional cultures stories are poems recited to a rhythmic beat in a song-like fashion. It always reminds of Rap music, which seems similar.

2. NOOOO ... Rap (or "sound shit" as I like to call it ) has nothing to do with culture , any culture
Rap is one of those things that I wish we can hide away when Aliens visit.

There's plenty of good rap out there, you just have to ignore the popular "Gangsta" shit.

Or you mean you heard some shit on the radio? You probably think the Black Eyed Peas are real hip-hop.

Do everyone a favor and educate yourself:

16. What does "PC" have to do with this?
You claiming it "has nothing to do with culture, any culture" when there is clear evidence to the contrary is what's ignorant, not you personally hating the few songs you've heard.

13. True.
And I listen to music from the 1920s through today. I think exposing myself to all types of music has made me appreciate the good in every genre.

17. Heh, the Rap-bashing is very similar to the bashing of Jazz in the 20s.
Would be "defenders of Western Civilization against cultural decadence" decried Jazz as "degenerate N***er music".

20. No, there's quite a bit of jazz that sucks, i.e., smooth jazz.
Hip-hop's equivalent of smooth jazz is the current Auto-tune craze, among other subgenres. Every genre has its positives and negatives. And not all rappers/hip-hop artists sample or sample in uncreative ways, but I wouldn't expect you to know that.

24. Once again, your own words prove how you think.
If you don't want people to make negative assumptions about you, then say something that's actually well-thought out and informed.

22. LOL, you just proved my point.
In the 1920s people that hated Jazz said the same thing, that is wasn't "real music".

Like what Jay Z is now or any of those douches whos videos get played all the time on BET.

But artists that actually have some talent and try to say something are out there to. They dont get the exposure someone like T-Pain gets because they dont have as much booty talk in their songs.

But Paris, Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, Public Enemy, Krs One etc are what I would call good rappers.

edit I think I replied to the wrong part of the thread.

Hip Hop has deep cultural roots.
