Heidi brings home the coolest gifts!
I never had boxed wine! It was always the stuff in these old glass bottles (how retro is that?) But now I'm looking forward to being very sophisticated and enjoy 1.5 liters (almost 3 gallons) of 'White Wine' (that's what it says) form Austria. And the wine connaisseurs on DU know that the best wine comes from Austria. This one's even coming form a vineyard called 'Emperor's Rock.' There are not many emperors anymore making their own wine. It must be outstanding! :woohoo:

And it's 'dry' wine. It's not wet like the old stuff in the glass bottles I had before. It's probably just one small baby step away from being a premier cru classé!

1. I know it seems tacky
but as a wine aficionado, boxed wine is the thing of the future. It is cheaper to transport and contains less carbon footprints, there are no issues with cork, which is becoming a rare thing indeed and it will stay fresher longer. It's a bitter glass to swallow, but many experts agree, this is the way wine is going.

Prost!

2. Oh, I'm not denying it.
Corks are a problem, and recycling of glass needs more energy. But I have yet to find a good quality wine that's also available in a box.

3. Me too
but in the next few years the wine establishment (not including the French purists) will start selling their wines in this fashion. In the meantime, I'm buying Vin de Pays de L'Herault and mixing it in with my regular purchases. It's not too bad for table wine :toast:

5. Smart ass!
Of course I'm not mixing the wine. I'm drinking them separately but mixing certain boxed wines in with my collection of bottled wines....

Why I oughta! :spank:

At least you can stack the boxed wine better than the Bocksbeutel bottles. :hide:

12. Oh shit
I think you are confusing me with my mother-in-law. I can't stand that stuff :puke:

Though I must admit that I bought a very small decorative bottle of Stroh today at the store and dayum, that stuff's the shit!

We are going to take a long walk tomorrow in the Englisher Garten then come home and make Glühwein and put a shot of that in it. MMMMM.

14. Stroh? The Spirit Of Austria?
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ...

You can't use that in Glühwein! Only Punsch, Grog, Jägerteee or Suicide!

Oh, wait a second! Is it already Glühwein-Zeit? :woohoo:

15. I would drink it straight in a small snifter
but it is Glühwein-zeit and HerrHerr suggested it. He had the same reaction you did too EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I love the hints of nutmeg and cloves though.

Only a few more weeks until the Christmas markets open up! I'm so excited. :woohoo:

6. Gasp CMW!
As much as I adore Heidi, is boxed wine truly the wave of the future? What in heavens name am I going to do with my wine aerator? As a matter of fact, I just decanted some malbec and am sipping as I type.

<<< similar to mine

10. Ohh, nice decanter!
I have a similar one, although not with an aerator - I just try to aerate with pouring the wine in. And funny, Malbec was last week's table wine here. ;)

Cheers!

16. Malbec was last weeks pick?
Humph . . . I missed that. Oh well.

Anyway, try the aerator, works great.

As a side note, it does improve the flavor of the reds that friends bring over, you know, those fabulous friends that know nothing about wine, but bring it because they know you like reds. :) Bless their hearts.

That is some good stuff.

Heidi's just the coolest, isn't she? You're not too bad yourself, CMW. :hi: to both of you!

27. Oh, great!
My wife buys me 'White Wine' in a box, and everyone here thinks it's the coolest thing to do. It's probably made out of 100% sulfur and a hint of citric acid, and she tries to kill me, but hey, Heidi's cool. If CMW dies because of it, well, Heidi's still cool!

:P

28. OK, if you died maybe that wouldn't be so cool after all.
Cause we'd miss you here and everything. But honestly, I don't think that would interfere with Heidi's coolness level. :P

30. Many people go to bed at night thinking no one would miss them if they die.
You, my friend, can rest easy knowing that a whole lot of people would miss you. What more could you possibly want, really?

21. I've got 60 bottles of various makers and vintages.
It's a wonderful drink for the holidays.

We got lucky in the '90s when there was a big dump of the stuff on the market and we were able to pick up Vintage Port for as little as $20 a bottle. Of course, some of the more recent bottles have been a teeny bit more expensive but oh well! you only live once!

Watch out for Stephanie Miller paying you a visit with that boxed wine around! ;)
