4. USA Today says it's crappy but fun . . .
because of all the great visuals. I may check it out when it comes to the dollar theater near by condo.

26. It was fun. People need to lighten up.
And great special effects.

I was happy the Mayan thing played almost an insignificant role and, as the trailers already show, seeing the Vatican come down in spite of all of the praying going on was brave of the film maker.

12. I remember liking 2010, but it's been so long that I've forgotten the details
Although someone mentioned aerobraking today in another thread and I thought of the Russian (?) ship doing it in the movie. Guess I'd better add 2010 to the Netflix queue...

:)

13. It was a Russian ship.
The "Leonov."

The book was far better, written by Arthur C. Clarke, naturally.

25. it's funny to see it now
because of the messed-up economy and my issues with un-and underemployment, i've had to move back into my parents' house...

i have great memories watching the movie when it first came on cable (I was 9 or 10) and wondering where I (and humanity) would be in 2010 at age 34...Hard to believe, but this was still in the era when the biggest thing any kid could dream to be was an astronaut...I envisioned the chance of seeing Jupiter up close in 2010, along with space stations, planetary colonization, etc...As ironic fate would have it, these days I'm back in this same living room watching that same movie in 2009 and my future wasn't anything like i had planned....

10. I saw it this afternoon.
It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I think part of it is because it's so over-the-top, and because the movie really doesn't take itself that seriously. The visuals were amazing, and some of the stuff was so preposterous that it's just hilarious. I laughed more at that movie than any other movie I'd seen since "The Hangover" earlier this year.

What really surprised me, however, was the fact that the acting wasn't terrible. Don't get me wrong, there weren't any really outstanding performances... But there weren't any truly terrible performances, either. There were a lot of overly schmaltzy scenes, but I think they did a pretty good job of establishing the characters. They weren't all one-dimensional caricatures like you might expect to see in a movie like this, and I actually cared what happened to them in the end.

It was completely ridiculous, over-the-top, and a lot of fun, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

11. It's a disaster flick, not Schindler's List... it was a great movie
for its genre. I don't think anyone expects it to be a Oscar-caliber script with Oscar-caliber acting, but it certainly was much more enjoyable than a lot of Oscar nominated flicks that I've seen (yes, Sideways, I'm talking to you).

The CGI effects were great. It was a fun way to spend 2 hours and 38 minutes at the theater. Pure popcorn movie.

There were some great explosions, nice pyroclasts, massive DISASTER, and the kissy-kissy was kept to about the minimum possible in a big-budget film, so I liked it.
