Help me understand why I like listening to the Nixon White House tapes
When I just a teenager I spent much of my free time hoping to hell that Nixon would be forced out of office. Nothing has changed. Clearly Nixon was among the most evil persons to ever occupy the White House.

However these days I seem to enjoy listening to the Nixon White House tapes. Even more so than LBJ's tapes. Johnson recorded at least as much as Nixon and evidence suggests that he started taping Air Force 1 (some have suggested these recordings were going on even as he was being sworn in immediately after the Kennedy assassination).

Listening to Nixon, the world's most evil man, brings me certain comfort. So strange! At times he seems to show human qualities. I don't begrudge a Grizzly bear if he eats another human. It's what they may do. I just avoid the bear. Likewise as I would avoid a person like Nixon.

With Nixon there is that same quality of fear the rest of us have. Only he shows it in response to Gays, Jews, blacks and the media. But his fear is genuine.

Or maybe it's just nostalgia. That and the way even his White House exhibited some kind of bipartisan cooperation with Congress. Compared to Bush II that is.

At any rate my enjoyment of listening to the Nixon tapes is finally wearing off. I just need to know why it happened in the first place.

Wiley.
