Just had a client threaten to complain to my supervisor....
I kinda lost it, and said, "Go ahead. If she backs me up, it just gives me more authority. If she sides with you, the worst that will happen is that someone else will get your case. Either way, I win."

Should I be worried?

1. It depends...
what do you do? I used to tell customers at Starbucks that someone else could make their drink but since I'd trained everybody else who worked there, it would still suck.

2. I'm a social worker. And the client is basically demanding I break state and fed regs.
Still, I was not my usual, calm self.

3. I was going to say you have to let the client win. But that is in business,
not with gov't regs and law. That your supervisor will clearly back you up on. Don't tell them you win, just get your supervisor to tell them, or handle it.

4. Then no, I think you're fairly safe.
I don't know anything about the field but I suspect that the only way a Social Worker wouldn't generate complaints is if they weren't doing their job. I used to be a literacy-activist/NPO-wonk working with a public school system and the only time I wasn't getting yelled at for doing my job I was on vacation or handing people program funds...they left voicemail instead.

Thankless work. It's why I went into retail, for the lower-stress environment.

6. In this economy? Nah, no worries.
Do you know how to pick produce and sleep on a converted school bus?

7. No worries
Doubtful he'll complain since he asked you to break the law. And if he does, just focus on how he was asking you to break the law.
