Life sucks
So I got offered a clerk job with the census. It will last for 8 weeks. It pays $8.75 an hour.

This sounds lame enough as it is, but the worst part is that I will have to drop Spanish with only a few weeks left in the semester. And it's too late to drop with a W, so my transcript will probably get an F even though I'm getting an A in the class.

I would turn down the job, but I have been eating noodles for several meals a day for weeks, and having a few bucks kicking around will give me the cashola to eat something other than noodles. Furthermore, I need to go back to the dentist and I need to get some meds, so that should wipe out pretty much my whole paycheck.

Fuck. x(

1. I am so sorry.
I am in the same boat. Do you think your prof would give you an incomplete?

2. I'm wondering if there's any way that I can do the homework and take the tests
Especially since the lowest test gets dropped, meaning that if I bomb the last test I can still get an A.

I'll have to talk to her about it. :(

3. Unless she has a heart of stone she would have to bend.
I really hope things improve for you.

it might be a conversation class
in which case it's the student who has to bend -- you can't do conversation without being present

but yah i'd talk to the instructor first

if the instructor insists on the student's presence, at that point, i'd just decline the job

noodles aren't that bad, i could eat the chicken ramen all day long

5. Talk to the school, they probably have a way of getting you through without an "F"
Yours sounds like a reasonable case of hardship. Find the person who can do it because the first people you encounter may be "the law is the law" types. That is their job. But the rules are rarely as rigid as they would have you believe. If I learned anything in college it was to be persistent.

7. frankly in like situations i just ate the noodles, grades come first before an 8 week temp job
Edited on Thu Nov-12-09 05:25 PM by pitohui
and i'm afraid i've gone as long as 20 years between dental visits

i wouldn't even consider dropping the course, as another poster suggests, i would talk to the instructor and see what my options are but in a language class it's quite possible that you are expected to be present and participate (if it's a conversation class) -- if you must be present to pass, then you must be present, it's the nature of some classes and labs that there is no substitute for one's physical presence

what would you have done if you had NOT been offered this job? you would have cont'd on, eaten noodles, gotten an A in the class, and gone to the dentist in the great whenever

i suggest you continue with that plan

an 8 week temp job paying less than $9 an hour is not worth getting an F and derailing your education over

i'm not saying this lightly, i'm saying this because i've been there, at one point in college, i was actually living on campus and i don't mean in the dorm, i mean i was homeless and couch surfing the lounge and a friend's living room in the married student dorm...getting my education was more important than any temp job, besides the temp job won't pay enough to pay any serious dental bill anyway, so you'd be throwing away your grade and probably still not going to get your goal

good luck i'll be thinking of you

8. +1
and I say that having been homeless. $9/hr. temp work isn't going to change anybody's living situation much...it's not like you can live on $9/hr. P/T pay.

9. How much will it cost you to retake the class?
This sucks, I agree, the economics side of me is checking in.

10. In a few years it will just be a funny storie to tell your friends and family.
By the way, you can cook a pot of red beans and rice for cheaper than noodles and it will last a week. Done it many a time.
