1. Star Gazer Lilies
But they are very fragrant so take that into consideration.

3. In this situation, peonies.
Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 11:08 AM by Chan790
I'm a big believer in the whole "meanings of flowers" thing...nothing strange or occult, I just think it's classy to be able to send a message with bouquet selection.

Peonies mean "healing"
Yarrows mean "Good health"

Those would be my choices thusly.

Edit: Adding a handy reference. http://www.aboutflowers.com/flower-a-plant-information-and-photos/meanings-of-flowers.html

6. uh, I never get them
on the rare occasion I buy them for myself I tend to go for either a wildflower look, sunflowers, or the other extreme - bromiliads or orchid looking things. Odd succulents or houseplants are what I would really like.

7. Instead Of....
I actually would rather see them going to a nursing home,a cancer ward--any place where they can be most appreciated. I have found that those who enjoy life the most, who want to savor every crumb are those in a most fragile state(health wise)and it always gives me a boost to share my "gift" with others and create more smiles then what I would get myself. I find gift givers also appreciate the idea and often go overboard with the bounty knowing that many will enjoy what would have been a gift appreciated only by one.

11. Another vote for yellow roses
My mother, when she lived, always sent me yellow roses for my birthday. She loved roses, and my favorite color is yellow. It was a great compromise!

Haven't had yellow roses sent to me since she died - my husband usually just gives me some bouquet the kids pick out.

17. Make a pumpkin vase!
Create a Pumpkin Vase
Here's a step-by-step how-to on creating a festive arrangement in a gourd or pumpkin. To keep it easy, we'll use pumpkin in these instructions but remember, if it can hold water, it can be a vase, so let your personality shine through!

1. Be sure the pumpkin can stand upright on its own – cut off the curved bottom to level it if not.

2. Place a small plate or piece of wax paper under the pumpkin to protect your table.

3. Place a cup upside down on top of the pumpkin and trace around the edge of the cup.

4. Use a sharp knife to cut out the circle.

5. Scoop the pulp from inside of the pumpkin and discard.

6. Insert soaked florist's foam or a water-filled cup with a grid of florist's tape to hold the flowers in place. (We don't generally recommend pouring the water directly inside the gourd - a cup or container or foam placed inside works best.)

7. Arrange flowers in the foam as you would any other vase.

Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 05:23 PM by Bertha Venation
This is what I got her:

It has sunflowers, delphiniums, and roses. I hope the flower place does it somewhat like the picture online, or at least uses the right flowers.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

PS Here's a hint: I got these at aspca.flowerclub.com. Part of the proceeds goes to the ASPCA.
