The Top 10 Horror Movies of the Decade
http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-1550-Seattle-Movie-Examiner~y2009m10d21-The-Wednesday-10--The-Top-10-Horror-Movies-of-the-Decade

10. The Devil's Backbone
9. The Others
8. The Descent
7. The Orphanage
6. Audition
5. {Rec}
4. Let the Right One In
3. Shaun of the Dead
2. Pan's Labyrinth
1. 28 Days Later

Of those, I've seen The Others, The Descent, Shaun, and 28 Days Later. All four were pretty good, I love 28 Days Later and would definitely include it in any all-time greatest Horror movie list. I've also seen the American version of {rec} "Quarrantine" that was a pretty decent movie.

1. I actually liked Quarantine better than Rec.
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 06:30 PM by Forkboy
Neither was great, but I liked that one a bit better.

Some of those are good (and a few, Audition, Shaun and Pan's Labyrinth, are great), but if some of those represent the best horror of the decade then Karloff is rolling in his grave.

2. Number 4 is my all-time favorite movie
But I would hesitate to call it "horror."

7. I have heard many good things about that movie but still haven't seen it.
I'm going to have to track it down and check it out.

23. Trust me. It's not that scary.
It's just an emotional punch in the gut.

16. A heads up
When you look for it on Blu Ray or DVD, make sure the package on the back reads "Subtitles: English (Theatrical)" instead of simply "Subtitles: English". This link should explain it.

18. Thank you for that heads up.
I have two copies of a Godzilla movie, one a bootleg and one the real copy, and the subtitles are different in a lot of places. I never knew until i got the real copy just how different it was, and how much it changes the tone of a movie. So this is good info to know. :toast:

20. Shit. Now I gotta check my copy.
I must prepare to be imperfectly pleased.

I hate when that happens.

3. Agreed on 28 Days Later and Shaun. I'd have to have Devil's Rejects in there.
I admit I haven't seen most of those, but will now have to.

13. Wow. I found The Devil's Rejects to be close to unwatchable
I liked aspects of it from a narrative standpoint (e.g., the bad guys as the protagonists; the Thelma & Louise ending, etc.) but mostly I had to force myself to watch it.

6. Pan's Labyrinth was wonderful, but more a fantasy than a horror film.
Most of the otehers I haven't seen.

8. Pan's Labyrinth was close to perfection.
While sad, the ending was poetic to me. Great movie.

19. Certainly one of my top five all-time favorites
I agree with the assessment that it's not quite a horror film, though.

26. Definitely more in the fantasy realm.
I think people see the creature design and say "monster", making it horror to them.

29. I, for one, am glad to see it on this list and would have ranked it #1
The beauty of that movie is that it weighs "fantasy" horror with real-life horror that is far more terrible.

I love, love, love that movie.

14. I don't know how anyone could find it surprising after The Sixth Sense
I mean, it was nicely atmospheric and all that, but when I saw it in the theater, it seemed as though most people figured out the gimmick pretty early on.

22. I figured it out quickly, but still liked it better than The Sixth Sense.
Had a nice Turn-of-the-Screwness about it, and the {spoiler} felt less gimmicky than it did in The Sixth Sense.

25. "The Others" is on my top ten "most underrated" horror films of all time.
Mostly for the scene in which the "help" have to explain to Nicole Kidman what's really going on. Creepy.

24. I agree with most of those, but where is "Frailty".
The Descent was one of the very few movies in recent years that actually scared me. I liked Audition, but found it to be overrated. I liked 28 Days Later too, but I thought the sequel was better. However, I think "Frailty" belongs towards the very top (bottom) of that list. Hardly contained any blood, yet was scary as hell. Had a pretty amazing message too. The only one in that list I haven't seen is {Rec}, I'll have to check that one out.

27. "Re-cycle" has some fantastic horror scenes
From Hong Kong, Re-Cycle is a fantasy overall, but the horror scenes beat what Hollywood is putting out.

Fraility should be on the list as well.
