Some harp afficionados think he plays too many notes, a la Popper, but he's the best I've ever seen in person ( although Jerry Portnoy, and Big Walter Horton are right up there too ( too young to have seen Sonny Boy, Little Walter etc)......and I was supposed to see Musselwhite tonight, but the show was already sold out.

37. Wow--was that at Eddie Shaw's by any chance?
here's a lesson about not putting stuff off....I am originally from Chicago, and most recently lived there parts of '78 and '79. But also lived there for a year from mid'75-to mid'76.... I saw lots and lots of blues those years but never saw Wolf or Hound Dog Taylor for some reason. Made myself a New Year's resolution that I'd see both in the next couple of months. Well, Wolf died January 10th, and Hound Dog died 10 days later...And yeah, those guys used to play LATE...I remember the night before my brother's wedding in '82, going to see Junior Wells at Minstrel's ( just about under the Loyola "L" stop). He started about 10 too...Me and my buddy were there from the start of the show and when we staggered out of there at about 3:30, the drummer looked at us and shouted, "where you guys goin'? We got another set to go".

36. Not a tour de force, but a great performance by the band: Lookin' For Love - J Geils,
with harp by Magic Dick.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRezwP_znTc&feature=related
A lot of fun from Germany in '79.

Richard Salwitz - Magic Dick - is one of the greatest harp players living now. Might want to try this, too:

http://vodpod.com/watch/1104546-whammer-jammer-j-geils-band

Whammer Jammer, another J Geils live performance, and a classic Magic Dick harp piece. He really is amazing - he makes me want to put my harps away and forget about them.

and that's just quickly off the top of my head. It's not that the harmonica is all that intense/groundbreaking but the way he uses it as an extension of his voice/soul just turns my head inside out! (in a good way)
