I only just now realized what "Bertha Venation" means as a screenname.
What a freaking idiot! And I only figured it out because my son was looking at DU and asked me to pronounce the name and I heard it said out loud, by me.

You're not an idiot!

6. 'Berth Ave, Nation' - it is clever isn't it? A berth is like a home, a place to be
secure, but the nation makes it everywhere - it's like the poster is on her home street, everywhere in the country... :)

32. It was released on a limited basis in 1985
The 70th anniversary of the film. I saw it at the Naro Theater in Norfolk, VA - the local 'arthouse' for international and independent films. There was a lecture beforehand, discussing both the technical achievements of the film, and the occasionally unsettling content. A live pianist accompanied the film, which heightened the realism of experiencing it in the same way as a 1915 audience. From our contemporary perspective, it does require some resolve to watch without being sickened in some places. I often had to detach myself and think about the technical aspects which made it groundbreaking.

34. Supposedly Griffith felt so terrible about the reaction to Birth, that he made
INTOLERANCE, and then a film about an interracial romance, BROKEN BLOSSOMS.

35. I have heard that too
On the other hand, Lillian Gish went to her grave (at age 99, in 1993), defending Griffith and the film from charges of racism.

Of course, Gish was a fascist. She once wrote Governor and Nancy Reagan, during the Vietnam era, thanking them for calling war protestors "nazis". She said "you echo my thoughts every time you open your mouths!" :puke:

She also was an America Firster along with Charles Lindbergh.

If the good die young, no wonder she lived to be almost 100.

33. odd thing about that film...
An odd thing about that film... when I saw it in the movie store years ago, I simply saw the name of the movie and that it starred Broderick, so on that basis alone, I rented it-- expecting little more than another Mat Broderick funny slacker movie.

Imagine the surprise of this prudish, straight, then-uptight guy's reaction to the movie as a whole. And oh yes, I did watch the entire thing-- getting more and more engrossed in it, and by the end of it, thinking to myself that it was one of the best perspectives I'd ever been given into that particular world, and changing my opinions and perceptions like nothing else to that point ever had.

And who says good movies are hard to find.... :)

43. interesting
My brother-in-law -- a fundy -- went to see it in the theater with my sister and me. I was shocked that he wanted to see it. I've always wondered if he walked our of that movie with his butt cheeks tightly clenched.

It is a really wonderful movie. One of my top ten.
