There was a lecture beforehand, discussing both the technical achievements of the film, and the occasionally unsettling content. From our contemporary perspective, it does require some resolve to watch without being sickened in some places. I often had to detach myself and think about the technical aspects which made it groundbreaking.

An odd thing about that film... when I saw it in the movie store years ago, I simply saw the name of the movie and that it starred Broderick, so on that basis alone, I rented it-- expecting little more than another Mat Broderick funny slacker movie.

Imagine the surprise of this prudish, straight, then-uptight guy's reaction to the movie as a whole. And oh yes, I did watch the entire thing-- getting more and more engrossed in it, and by the end of it, thinking to myself that it was one of the best perspectives I'd ever been given into that particular world, and changing my opinions and perceptions like nothing else to that point ever had.

And who says good movies are hard to find.... :)
