Is Sammy Sosa whitening his skin? So what?
I care that Sosa might have 'juiced.'
I care that Sosa might have lied about it.

But personal style and appearance is a stupid preoccupation. Whatever makes him happy.

One can’t help but do a double-take when looking at former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa these days. That’s because his skin has transformed from a coffee-brown complexion to one more akin to coffee with heavy cream. Former Cubs employee Rebecca Polihronis, who talks frequently with Sosa, told the Tribune’s Fred Mitchell that people are making far too big of a deal out of Sosa’s new appearance,

"He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin," Polihronis said. "Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.

The reason Sosa is in the spotlight is because he appears to be yet another brown person unhappy in his skin. He says that’s not true. But in the photos, Sosa’s eyes appear lighter and his hair straighter. It does make you wonder….

Is Sosa bleaching his skin? Should we care? There's a larger question here that has to do with perpetuating stereotypes and certain standards of beauty. It's why some people were upset in 2008 when singer Beyonce's skin appeared to be lightened in a group of L'Oreal ads for hair coloring products.

1. Well whatever he is doing it doesn't look very good.
IMO, even taking bad lighting into consideration, his skin, eyes and hair do not look good. But if that is how he wants to look - more power to him.

2. So what is what I say also.
Whether or not he has lightened his skin or has gotten a treatment will tell in time, I'm okay to wait...or not care long enough to wait and see. I have seen women on TV who looked awful after getting a skin peel so I have no doubt he would too. As far as the green contact lens, I have not liked them forever or the advertisements that make it like if you have brown eyes you are just dull. My eyes are turquoise and I have had a lot of people with brown eyes tell me they wish they had my eyes and I always tell them that I always wanted dark eyes.

I have read articles today attacking not only him but also his country the Dominican Republic. If their information about the country was correct, the articles might be better and if they were not based on biases it would be even better. I don't like people much today but then I don't like people most of the time. I do not deny my own misanthropy. ;)

4. It's his skin.
He can do what he likes with it. Lots of us white folks used to go for deep tans. Why shouldn't black folks be able to go for a lighter look if that is what they want to do? Who are we to judge what he chooses to do?

5. If I think about it for even just a minute...
...I realize that light skinned people get tanned all the time.

And do I care? Not at all.

I do hope it's not much more work than laying out in the sun is...
