Anyone ever mounted a TV on a wall?
The Dingbat household will be babysitting a ginormous television for a few months, through an odd set of circumstances I won't go into.

That's long enough for me to want to mount the sucker, as it will not only probably double our electric bill but may indeed prove a hazard to navigation in the living room.

It is huge. Did I mention that? One of them biggo LCD jobs, like four feet wide. Watch me drop it, or put a baby through it or something. :eyes:

Anyhow... anyone ever performed this task? I've got the big articulated wall arm thing for it, and instructions to start reading sometime tonight. Any tips would be appreciated.

I have what I perceive are critical tools, such as a cordless drill and some decent beer. :D

1. Sounds kinky, but what ever.
Who am I to tell you what to mount and what not to mount. And the wall part is a little perplexing.

....wait.... you mean.... uh, sorry - please disregard.

Sorry, but I can't get into that.

3. It sounds more like mounting a wall to a TV

I suggest copious amounts of beer and duct tape, and lots of back episodes of Red Green.

4. When they say to drill into studs, they're not kidding.
You don't want to try to hold up a heavy TV (and mount) with just plaster. Get a stud finder, and take your time with it, so there's no question. A level may also help.

Count all the pieces and tools first, and rehearse every step before doing anything; this'll keep it down to one extra trip to the hardware store.

17. Do not mount it over the fireplace
I know it looks really, really cool, but mounting a flat-screen TV over a fireplace voids the warranty, according to the Costco installer guys.

You're also going to need to start saving -- once you've watched HDTV, you'll refuse to go back to the regular-sized screen and substandard signal. ;-) We've had ours for almost two years now. It brings a whole new dimension to sporting events, for instance.

Good luck!

18. If Michael on The Office can do it
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 09:39 PM by pokerfan
then so can you...

"I finally broke down and bought myself a plasma TV. Check it out. (reveals a tiny TV) I actually hung this on the wall myself. Sometimes I will just stand here and watch television for hours."

Assuming a studded wall with drywall, make sure you are mounting it directly into a stud. Don't necessarily use the supplied fasteners as they may have skimped on the hardware. Use extra big ass lag screws.

A common mistake is mounting the TV too high on the wall which makes it a pain in the neck (literally) to watch. For ergonomic reasons alone, the TV should be mounted close to eye level.
