80s Fans -- Post something that captures the decade.
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 02:06 PM by Arugula Latte
This one does it for me. "Rip It Up" by Scottish band Orange Juice. The hair. The poofy dress. The boing, boing, boing synth beat. The dancing. The sax riff (complete with sunglasses on the saxophone player). The flashy lights. The whole vibe.

Love the lyrics: "I hope to God you're not as dumb as you make out."

That's Edwyn Collins singing lead. He later had a hit in the U.S. with "A Girl Like You." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rqCJdutB8I

3. Jesus Jones - Right Here Right Now
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 02:33 PM by Swede
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x67Wu46L4w&feature=fvsr

A woman on the radio talked about revolution
when it's already passed her by
Bob Dylan didn't have this to sing about you
you know it feels good to be alive
I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up from history
I saw the decade in, when it seemed
the world could change at the blink of an eye
And if anything
then there's your sign... of the times
I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up from history
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up from history
Right here, right now
there is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
watching the world wake up...

That pic captures his contempt for the working people who built this country. Nixon poisoned the well, and Reagan took the rancid turd and gold-plated it.

OMG, Peekaboo. Haven't heard that one in ages. :hi:

Oh, and Esprit ... I grew up in the San Fran. Bay Area and they were a S.F.-based store. I remember going into their outlet a few times -- very big deal.

26. On that show, I believe they did three songs...
...if you look at the beginning of the clip, you'll see Jason & The Scorchers, with the "meltdown" finish to their set. The stage would then revolve, the next act would be up, and they'd do their set. The show was on for an hour. Other acts I remember were Flock of Seagulls and Romeo Void (whose hit, "Never Say Never," was the opening theme for the show).

This was before MTV had really ramped up and rock videos were a "so what" commodity. I LOVED that show.

39. That's the only one of their songs I've ever performed
wish I had a tape of that. Had a band in the late 80's that did it for about a year, and I sang it pretty damn well if I do say so myself ( and I do ). ( I also never travel too far, without a little Big Star). Never did see The Replacements, but have seen Alex Chilton. ( Unfortunately the sound man didn't know what he was doing and can't even say whether Chilton and band were any good or not; sound was that bad)

31. Frankie says
RELAX:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPLrXFw76Qg

This was the song that would not die. Banned by the BBC, it clung to the charts for a year before it hit number one. Released in the US the following year, MTV refused to play the original video. The song, once again, snaked up the Billboard chart for another year before it finally cracked the Top Ten.

This song defined the 80's, of this I have no doubt.

I think it was Dave Marsh who very accurately said this video "had all the warmth and sincerity of a deodorant commercial"...I still cringe whenever I see this, but the apparently enormous popularity of this video says something about the effect that MTV had on the victory of image over substance. As most anyone who's ever seen Bruce in person can attest, it's not easy to make him look phony and contrived onstage, but this video pulled off that almost impossible feat.

37. How many times was that video played ... over and over and over ...
Part of its popularity had to be that Courtney Cox looked like everybody's friend from high school in those days ... Every girl could imagine Bruce picking her out of the crowd. Her dancing ability was about the same as an average h.s. girl's too.
