The Trabant. The plucky 2-stroke engine powered East German car that flooded the streets of West Germany after the fall of the Wall.

The German Government has been trying in vain to get these blue smoke bleching cars off the road, but it hasn't put a much of a dent in these loveable little automobiles.

4. True Trabant story: I was posted to Germany after Basic Training in the Army,
and arrived in-country 2 days after the Wall fell. (Hmm. That's 20 years -2 days ago, I guess...) In the months after the Wall came down, one started seeing Trabants everywhere in the Western half of new Germany. One day, a friend of mine and I were riding in the back of a deuce-and-a-half (an Army cargo truck) and a red and white Trabant convertible pulled up behind us. I don't know if Trabant made a convertible, or if the owners did the job themselves, but anyway, there were four STAGGERINGLY gorgeous German girls in the car. They started flirting with us guys in the truck. We sure enjoyed that! When the girls had had enough, they pulled into the left lane to pass us, and as they did, the girl in the front passenger seat stood up and whipped her blouse off. Nothing underneath! Well, that drove us crazy, as you can imagine...

I've had fond memories of German girls and Trabants ever since... B-)
