Are there any good movies premiering during the holiday season?

There's been a dearth of good movies this year due to the writer's strike a couple of years ago. I think, so far, the best movie I've seen this year is Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. Star Trek and Harry Potter were also very entertaining.

Then there were some runners' up, such as District 9 and 9... but otherwise, it wasn't a good year for movies.

Anything good before 2009 takes its last breath?

1. I've been told by several people that the Jim Carrey animated Christmas Carol is excellent.

Very dark though, not the happy lightened-up version that one would expect and so many of us are used to, being adapted from a dark short story from Dickens.

2. Lots of people have poo-pooed it, but I'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes

with Robert Downey Jr. (Holmes) and Jude Law (Watson).

Might not be stiff-upper-lip BBC Holmes, but it could be fun.

3. You're talking about any kind of movie, right? Not holiday movies?

Paranormal Activity is supposed to be one of the best horror movies in years.

Precious is getting very good reviews.

The Messenger looks good.

Not sure how I feel about The Fantastic Mr. Fox, it could be either really good or really bad.

There's the new Terry Gilliam movie coming out, he's can be on or off as well.

I'd stay away from 2012, Avatar, and The Lovely Bones. I'd wait for reviews on the Princess and the Frog.

4. I've been waiting for Shutter Island.

I thought it was supposed to be out in Oct but it didn't show up in the threatres yet. It looks pretty good.

5. What are you looking for in that regards?

Avatar is supposed to be a BIG movie - James Cameron, great effects, interesting sci-fi story. Is it a smash like Titanic, or another Abyss, though?

The new Clooney movie looks like it could be good as well Up in the Air, I think it's called. Not a big movie, though.

Looks very good and getting a lot of press ahead of its release. Not going to be the most upbeat movie of the holidays.

Avatar has potential but haven't heard any reviews.
