16. I love your description of her.
I think that if it wasn't for the Kayne West thing, she would have been forgotten in another eighteen months. She is totally forgettable.

6. Shes a country singer?
I had no idea who she was until I saw something on the news about Kanye cock blocking some award. I just saw her on SNL and I wasnt sure what kind of music she sings or that she was even a singer cause she was hosting to.

8. I fail to see her appeal
I've heard people who were better singers at karaoke night at the bowling alley. She's cute but many 20 year old girls are.

13. I am in total agreement.

I had a conversation with my wife about her and why she is so popular and I posed the question. If K.D. Lang had Swift's looks would she have done better in the country and western music world?

17. I can't help but like her
She may not have the greatest voice in a technical sense, but I think her singing voice fits her music pretty well.

She's only eighteen (I think) and has written or co-written all of the songs on the two albums she's released so far, so I don't think it's accurate to say that she's untalented. (Not that the OP did, but I have seen her lumped in w/ "manufactured" teen pop chicks several times.)

I'm not a hardcore fan or anything, but I haven't yet heard a song by her that made me want to change the station; maybe I just have a higher tolerance for country-pop story-songs than most of DU! haha

28. Exactly!
Give me some Tammy Wynette, some Dolly Parton early years, and some Trisha Yearwood for more contemporary stuff.

19. I agree that she didn't sound good on SNL at all. I think I've seen her
sing on some awards show before and she sounded ok but she seemed way off key or something on SNL.

21. i asked this in a thread yesterday
is she really considered country? i listened to her cd about 8 times this weekend while away with some friends on a tour of vt breweries and i consider her more dance pop than country. also it really ain't that good either.

22. She's considered "crossover" which really is just mildly twangy pop.
The ultimate money machine in Nashville is a young female "crossover" singer to get all the country $$$ and all the pop $$$

24. She struck lots of poses while singing on SNL
As if she went to Professional Rock Star School.

I find her voice utterly forgetable, and she is really rather average-looking for a girl that age.

I'm obviously the wrong demographic, though.

26. Her hit song is well written mainstream pop. I'd bet dollars to donuts she didn't pen it.
And yes, her voice is a little grating.

27. I tried researching this and it's hard to tell who wrote what.
I do respect her for writing her own songs but as is likely the case, it's hard to tell how much she wrote or how much other people wrote on her songs while giving her credit.

Her Wikipedia says that she was actually hired as a Nashville songwriter a few years before she became a singer. Who knows?

30. I'd guess that she writes over 50% of the lyrics to "her" tunes.
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 04:46 PM by MilesColtrane
These are handed over to a professional team of Nashville vets who expand those and write the music, finding a hook in the process.

Then the producer hones an arrangement and records it, bringing her in to sing after it's finished. A final vocal track is edited together and processed out of many Auto Tuned takes.

She's given credit for composing the song, because the label wants to enhance her credibility as a creative artist. The collaborators/real writers know this is part of the deal and work under those conditions.
