Why the HELL didn't you TELL me there's a NEW SINATRA BOX SET? Fan-fuckin'-FRANKTASTIC!
http://www.amazon.com/Sinatra-New-York-CD-DVD/dp/B002L2ALEU/

Sinatra: New York (4 CD/1 DVD) BOX SET
Frank Sinatra

Audio CD (November 3, 2009)
Original Release Date: November 3, 2009
Number of Discs: 5

Five-Disc boxed set features all previously unreleased live performances of Ol' Blue Eyes in 'The Apple'. Collection highlights performances recorded between 1955 and 1990 at iconic New York City venues. Frank Sinatra may have been born in Hoboken, New Jersey, but the Chairman of the Board always held a special place in his heart for the city that never sleeps-'The Apple,' as he called it. From a surprise appearance with Tommy Dorsey in 1955 to a 1990 concert at Radio City Music Hall, SINATRA: NEW YORK follows the singer onstage at various iconic New York City venues, living out one of his most famous lines: 'If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere.' The 71 previously unreleased performances gathered here (55 on CD/16 on DVD) capture the singer giving his electricifying best, reminding listeners why Sinatra' s celebrated baritone has been hailed as 'The Voice.' The set, produced by Charles Pignone, features deluxe packaging with rare, never-before-seen photos, tributes from Martin Scorsese, Tony Bennett, Yogi Berra, and Twyla Tharp, liner notes by Nat Hentoff, and essays by William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist and The French Connection; George Kalinsky, official photographer for Madison Square Garden for over 40 years; Tom Young, engineer for Sinatra; Joe & Sal Scognamillo, owners of Patsy's Italian Restaurant in New York City; and Frank Sinatra Jr.

2. Correction: A lot of "deluxe" carboard.
If Frank were here right now (and in many ways, he IS), he'd say "Hell, kid, you could make that $56 back and MORE in just an hour down at the casino."

3. to be clear...
...this is video as well as audio? Sounds yummy.

Last week on my local jazz radio station's Sinatra hour they played some rare, previously unaired recording sessions audio clips. That was very intriguing, to hear him working with the band, joking around, etc.

The 1955 concert is very nice. Frank is loose and relaxed.

6. Listening to the later concerts now
Not one, but two renditions of "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". What a treat. I'm sorry, '70s/'80s Sinatra doesn't really ring my bell.

12. Nelson Riddle was a music God.
He was the arranger. The best. Although Sinatra was also the best ever. Sinatra and Riddle were better than anyone this side of McCartney and Lennon, or Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Except Riddle didn't write. He just did. Wow.

Besides, I'll take Ella over Sinatra and day. The Society of Singers didn't name their award The Ella for nothin', ya know.

13. Sinatra's accompanist recently died.
Bill Miller, I think his name was. John Pizzarelli mentioned it today on his radio show.

Pianist Bill Miller, 91; Framed Sinatra's Songs With Elegance

Washington Post Staff Writer

Bill Miller with Frank Sinatra Jr. during a tour stop in Atlantic City in June. Miller was best known for his pensive introduction to the elder Sinatra's torch song "One for My Baby." He was Sinatra's pianist for almost four decades. (By Bill O'leary -- The Washington Post)

Bill Miller, the pianist whose light touch set the mood for many of Frank Sinatra's most memorable songs, died July 11 at Montreal General Hospital at the age of 91. He had a heart attack after breaking his hip July 1 while on tour with Frank Sinatra Jr.

Mr. Miller was the elder Sinatra's elegant, steady and often inspired accompanist for nearly four decades and was one of the privileged few allowed into the singer's inner circle. For the past eight years, he had worked with Sinatra's son.

Mr. Miller, content to toil in the shadows for much of his career, provided the musical framework for some of the elder Sinatra's finest performances. He was best known for his pensive introduction to the torch song "One for My Baby," written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. Sinatra recorded the tune in 1958 and sang it in almost every concert until he stopped performing in 1995.

Mr. Miller's unhurried piano line sets the mournful tone for the heartsick ballad, with its haunting opening lyric: "It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place except you and me."
