Our dog just had an encounter with a porcupine
I just pulled out about 15 quills. We're still calming her down.

Luckily, the quills were all in her left front leg and NOT in her face.

I don't think I could have dealt with that.

1. I Wish Your Dog Well
That's got to be painful.

3. It took a lot of doggie treats
And calm, soothing voices.

And a pair of pliers for a few of them.

4. She's fine
She's now quietly licking away at her leg.

She's very brave. And remarkably trusting.

We love her.

5. Well, at least it wasn't a skunk, or a coyote, or a wolf, wait
canuck, or a bear, or a moose. Canucks themselves, let alone their dogs, have been trampled to death by moose. Or is it mooses?

10. She's had her skunk encounter already
She won't be going near them again.

And as for coyotes, she's bigger than the average coyote. No moose in this area, only deer.

9. Been there with my dog Cindy, but they were in her face and
mouth. First time ever in all the years of having dogs. Were these large quills? The ones Cindy had were only 1/2" long. We spent 6 hours taking them out. She stood still for the ones in the back of her leg - about 50 of them. Had to rig up a blindfold for the ones on her face and in her mouth. She was a really good girl about it.

Hope your doggie is doing okay this a.m. It's traumatic for everybody :-(.

11. OUCH
I had the same experience with my old dog Kozmo but he got it in the face and mouth. Had to spend 500 bucks at the vet's office to get the quills removed. He never went near another porcupine after that. I'm glad your dog wasn't seriously injured.

12. I was waiting in the emergency vet's office one night
when a big chocolate lab came in with barbs all over his face. Poor baby! I told the parents that at least their dog would not go near a porcupine again.

And that is when they told me that this was the 4th time their dog had done this!

Hope yours only needs one porcupine lesson!

16. OMG
that makes me cringe. How terrible. Is that for real? That must have been one hunting dog to have sustained that many injuries and kept on going. Do you know if the dog survived?

18. My dog Fritz got it in the face; it was horrible.
He was such a good dog while we pulled out the quill; he had a lot of swelling afterwards. I feel for ya!
